maplesyrup_120While Mother Nature contemplates spring, the Cayuga Nature Center is preparing for its annual Maple Festival March 24 and 25. The festival will run from 9am to 2pm with an all-you-can-eat breakfast including local sausage and apple crisp.

Live music from 10am-4pm as well as crafts and games for kids, animal programs, maple syrup demonstrations, a self-guided hike along the Sugarbush Trail, and various local vendors will be offered.  The Nature Center’s Maple Festival is part of the New York State Maple Producers Weekend.

This year’s music lineup features local musicians, including Kenny T. & Wildfire, Technicolor Trailer Park, Mutsu, Drew Minson, and Ironwood. Venders will offer soap, alpaca yarn, jewelry, and maple bacon ice cream.

The Animal Room will feature an animal feeding on Saturday at noonAdditional animal programing will occur throughout the weekend: Saturday at 10:30am and 2pm and Sunday at 10:30am, 12pm, and 2pm. Mort the Eastern Box Turtle is the newest addition.

With its unique climate, soil and forests, New York State is naturally perfect for producing maple syrup. Behind each bottle, there's the story of a state, a way of life and generations of maple producers who take special pride in continuing the tradition today. Campers at this year’s Winter Camp helped tap the trees at the Nature Center. They have been boiling sap since early March because it takes 30-50 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup.
