"This work was inspired by two events that I experienced at Cornell," says art teacher Patricia Brown. "The first was the wonderful workshop with artist Lily Yeh on creating collaborative community based art. The second was at the Johnson Art Museum where the Mark Fox hanging paper sculpture "Untitled (Stingray)"caught my eye. After the students heard Lily Yeh speak they began to invision their art work being more visible in the building."
Students wanted to take old student lounge next to the Library over as a gallery space and sought permission from our Principle Eric Hartz. Jessica Stratton joined the high school Art Department. Creating a communal installation became a solution the encouraged all art classes to participate.
"Mark Fox's approach became our inspiration as each sudent could contribute personal images," Brown says. "Many months went by each student taking part. We assembled, it fell apart, we assembled again and again. We had to wait for the fire inspection to be done before hanging our temporary installation - so much paper! Now it is up!!!!! I hope you can come to see it. It is wonderful."
Each student was invited to paint twenty-five to thirty images. Working on the white side all the pieces were taped together and strung on fishing line. The 'clouds' were hung to fit this new gallery space.
