A retired Syracuse University professor, Sernett, is a well-known scholar among abolition movement enthusiasts. His library presentation will tell the story of the Underground Railroad in the context of the religious and reform movements of the pre-Civil War period, including the temperance crusade and the women's rights campaign. Frederick Douglass, Gerrit Smith, Harriet Tubman, and others will come to life in this lecture, as will the story of Syracuse's infamous 1851 "Jerry Rescue".
Mark Halperin is an editor-at-large and senior political analyst for Time. His talk at Wells, "Navigating the 2008 Presidential Election," provides a political expert's guide to the issues and debates facing voters in this year's national election. He will examine the candidates' biographies, policies, political skills, and presidential prospects, with sharp analysis and his trademark accessible, often humorous style.
LaVerne Misner Light, or "La" to her family and friends, was born into a family of performers in Niagara Falls, New York. From her stage debut at the age of seven, it was clear she was destined for a life in the arts. When she saw a professional production of Hedda Gabler at the age of thirteen, LaVerne's lifelong love for theatre was ignited. La soon brought this passion to Ithaca College where she studied speech and drama.
