ITHACA-The Tompkins County Public Library will host critically-acclaimed lecturer Milton Sernett for an illustrated discussion of New York's Freedom Trail, Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 1:00 PM in the Borg Warner Community Meeting Room.

A retired Syracuse University professor, Sernett, is a well-known scholar among abolition movement enthusiasts. His library presentation will tell the story of the Underground Railroad in the context of the religious and reform movements of the pre-Civil War period, including the temperance crusade and the women's rights campaign. Frederick Douglass, Gerrit Smith, Harriet Tubman, and others will come to life in this lecture, as will the story of Syracuse's infamous 1851 "Jerry Rescue".

OVEREXHAUSTION:  Don't you get overexhausted by people who overexaggerate?  They can drive one mentally insane.  Irregardless of whether or not they're telling true facts, the emotional feeling gets really and truly overpowering to unloosen them from their bad habits.

At the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired, we treat this kind of verbal overkill at our Alfred Kahn Clinic.

After treatment, our patients' futures in public employment may become even more limited, but we mustn't misunderestimate them.  They do become better writers and speakers, however.

SMART TALK
by Dr. Viva Palaver

ON LINE:  Down here in Underbelly, Texas, we at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired often wonder why patients from the New York City area stand on line.  They've been standing on line since before computerese began interfacing with good English.  Why?

Normal people stand in line.  As staff psychologist at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired, I wonder whether this odd use of on betrays a fear of being involved.  I can understand a New Yorker having such a fear.

Around here, folks are so involved, they're waitin' on each other rather than for them.

But there's that word on again, so maybe it has some attraction for those whose heads don't have room for more than two or three prepositions.  After all, they say they get on the plane rather than into it.  Doesn't that sound dangerous?

ImageThe Hangar Theatre welcomes legendary local actress LaVerne Light for a very special event-An Afternoon of Theatre with La. Light will once again grace the Hangar's Niederkorn Stage on Sunday, August 24 at 4:00 pm for a special theatrical reading directed by the Hangar's Interim Artistic Director Robert Moss. The reading will be followed by a question and answer session with Moss and Light.

LaVerne Misner Light, or "La" to her family and friends, was born into a family of performers in Niagara Falls, New York. From her stage debut at the age of seven, it was clear she was destined for a life in the arts. When she saw a professional production of Hedda Gabler at the age of thirteen, LaVerne's lifelong love for theatre was ignited. La soon brought this passion to Ithaca College where she studied speech and drama.
