civicensembleThe Cherry Arts, Inc. has appointed Jennifer Herzog as its new Associate Artistic Director. Herzog will be leaving her role as Associate Artistic Director at Civic Ensemble, of which she is a founding member, and where she was instrumental in the production of numerous readings and playwright's labs, engaging local and student artists, and overseeing social media operations as well as performing in many of those readings and productions. Most recently, she produced Civic Ensemble's acclaimed staged reading of Arthur Miller's INCIDENT AT VICHY, about a group of men detained in France during World War II before being sent to concentration camps.

Civic Ensemble was founded in 2012 by Herzog, Godfrey L. Simmons, Jr. and Sarah K. Chalmers. In those three years, Civic Ensemble has charted a course towards a full-service theatre that engages and develops artists in the community, both professional and neophyte, through the production of new plays, education programs, and community-based plays. Of Herzog's departure, Artistic Director Simmons says, "Jennifer is a dedicated and talented artist and a valuable asset to any theatre company. We are thrilled that she has found a new artistic home at The Cherry that will align so closely with her goals as a theatre artist."

civicChristmasPresent120Civic Ensemble presents The Spirit of Christmas Present: A Poetic Carol in Three Movements which is influenced by the humanitarian vision of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.  At the heart of Dickens' story are his concerns about poverty and social injustice, and while The Spirit of Christmas Present only deals with such themes indirectly, the staging of a nostalgic Christmas tale might help to restore a social harmony and well-being lost in the modern world.

The Spirit of Christmas Present is Civic Ensemble's first holiday offering, and is the first phase in the long-term development of a larger piece with conceiver Freddy Villano. Intended for a family audience including children of all ages, the actors will be performing in full mask, using only their bodies to communicate. Villano says of the show, "Generosity at this time of year is almost always equated with the material, but we're here to show you that it is most abundantly enjoyed through simple gestures of kindness."

Marking its 42nd season of producing outstanding professional theatre in the Finger Lakes, the Hangar offers a lineup featuring something for everyone. The four shows slated for next summer are I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti adapted by Jacques Lamarre from the memoir by Giulia Melucci, In the Heights with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and book by Quiara Alegría Hudes, Third by Wendy Wasserstein, and Constellations by Nick Payne. The Hangar's Mainstage season will run from June 16 - August 13, 2016.

Kicking off the Hangar's 2016 Mainstage season, making its professional regional premiere is I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti adapted by Jacques Lamarre from the memoir by Giulia Melucci. Melucci's best-selling memoir has been described as Eat, Pray, Love  with recipes.  This mouth-watering comedy celebrates the story of Giulia, a single New Yorker looking for love, and her Italian home cooking.  Meet her in the kitchen where she'll be serving up more than homemade pasta, as she recounts hilarious stories of the men in her life and the dishes she's made for them. Giulia will cook her way into the audience's heart as she prepares a three-course Italian meal from scratch on stage-a meal that she'll serve to select audience members at each performance. Rachel LambertFrom Ithaca to Beijing to New York City and now back to Ithaca! Rachel Lampert's THE SOUP COMES LAST opens for previews on Sunday, November 29 and runs for thirteen performances through December 13th. SOUP is a delightful and hilarious memoir of Lampert's 1997 trip to China to stage the first-ever production of WEST SIDE STORY in the Peoples' Republic. This international backstage story filled with miscommunications and cultural missteps has been a long-time favorite with Ithaca-area audiences. When SOUP played for a month Off-Broadway, the New York Times said:

"The trip was a comedy of errors and unmet expectations, and Ms. Lampert shows a deft sense of timing and a keen ability to make you see a scene through mere description. And in a lovely, surprising ending, she gives you a chance to test how good your mind's eye is against the real thing. That's when you fully realize just how good her performance and writing were."
