Lansing - State Senator Michael F. Nozzolio announced today that BorgWarner Morse TEC (BWMT) will invest over $47 million and create 174 jobs to produce its new Variable Cam Timing product line in Lansing, New York. As part of a State assistance package through Empire State Development (ESD), Senator Nozzolio secured $100,000 for the expansion of the company. "The expansion of BorgWarner Morse TEC will be another tremendous boost to the region, creating good-paying jobs for local residents," said Senator Nozzolio. "The company is making a major financial investment in our area and I was pleased to work with company officials in ensuring that BorgWarner TEC continues to grow in the Finger Lakes region."
BWMT will relocate its manufacturing of VCT systems to Tompkins County from its Sallisaw, Oklahoma plant and introduce three to six more products in the future. This is a new product line driven by breakthrough technology in variable cam timing systems. Engines equipped with this new technology realize improved fuel economy, reduced emissions, and enhanced vehicle performance."Senator Nozzolio and ESD responded quickly and appropriately to this significant job creation opportunity," stated Michael Stamm, President, Tompkins County Area Development. "The incentives delivered by the State and from TCAD through its new Empire Zone program will help leverage a substantial investment by Borg Warner and the creation of 174 new, high paying jobs for residents of the region."
In addition to the $100,000 secured by Senator Nozzolio, Empire State Development and BWMT have agreed to a series of project milestones through which the company will be eligible to apply for $650,000 in assistance. These funds include a $500,000 capital grant to help fund the purchase of machinery and equipment essential to producing VCT systems, and $150,000 in the form of a training grant for employees that will be working on the new VCT line.
Additional assistance includes an Empire Zone designation through Tompkins Area Development Corporation and ESD, and up to $400,000 from New York State Electric & Gas through the utility's Infrastructure Investment Program.
BorgWarner Morse TEC, subsidiary of Tier One automotive supplier BorgWarner Inc., is a global product leader in highly engineered components and systems for vehicle powertrain applications worldwide. The Tompkins County headquarters oversees operations at 16 locations in nine countries. Employment at the Lansing location has grown from 430 in 1982 to 1,329 currently. Their customers include VW/Audi, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Toyota, Renault/Nissan, Hyundai/Kia, Honda, BMW, Caterpillar, Navistar International, and Peugeot.
