ImageWASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Michael Arcuri (NY-24) continued his support of statutory Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) legislation which holds Congress and the President accountable for every federal dollar spent.

“Even in a time of economic hardship, we need to be fiscally responsible in our spending plans,” Arcuri said, “We have asked the American people to tighten their belts and we need to do the same in Congress by maintaining accountability for each federal dollar we spend and effectively move towards balancing the federal budget through statutory PAYGO.”

Current rules in the House of Representatives require that any spending bill must either be budget neutral, or be offset with some form of savings, in order to avoid a deficit increase. This legislation would automatically apply these rules to the House and Senate, as well as all branches of government, and impose mandatory program cuts if needed to achieve a balanced budget.

Tuesday’s announcement marks the first time the Obama Administration has officially transmitted legislation to Congress, a sign of the President’s continued commitment to restoring fiscal responsibility and accountability to government over the long-term.

Arcuri joins his colleagues in the Blue Dogs Coalition in support of statutory PAYGO as the Blue Dogs were founded in part on the principles of fiscally responsible and sensible government spending.
