He married Barbara Davis on May 16, 1953, and nine days later left for a two year stint in the U.S. Army. Sherman was employed as a welder at Cornell University for 43 years. After retiring from Cornell University he worked for the Lansing Parks and Recreation for several years. He was a charter member of the Lansingville Fire Department. He was also a longtime member of the Skamper Camper Club. He also belonged to Car Pride, a classic car club in which his pride and joy was his 1957 Green and White Oldsmobile which he won several trophies with over the years. He also belonged to the “Bored to Death” club which met twice a month to visit different businesses and then would enjoy lunch afterwards. He also built a few old trucks, painted cars, and built two dune buggies. He and Barbara traveled all over the country hitting all but six states of the U.S. including Mexico and Nova Scotia. They also made many cruises with Car Pride to interesting places throughout the Northeastern U.S. over the past several years.
Sherman is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Tobey of Lansing; daughters, Vicky Lyn Sharp (David Sterling) of Lansing and Tammy Lee (Buddy) DeYulis of Ebensburg, PA; grandchildren, Danielle Sharp (Ryan Fenner) and Justin Sharp (Cayla Griffin) both of Lansing, Kyle, Kasey, Kurtis (Ali Maruca) and Karlee DeYulis of Ebensburg, PA; great-grandchildren, Easton Fenner and Mia Rose Sharp; sisters, Edna Rosbaugh of Lodi and Betty Steverson of Sinclairville.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Josephine Edwards. He dearly loved his wife, kids and grandkids, especially the two little “Rug Rats” Easton and Mia Rose who always brought him so much pleasure every time they visited him. He also had a great love for coffee!! Sherman was loved by his family, friends, neighbors and hospital staff alike. Everyone at Hospicare called him a “gentle caring man”.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 3, at the Lansing United Methodist Church, 32 Brickyard Road, Pastor Jane Sautter officiating. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Hospicare for the gentle loving care that Sherman received for the past two weeks. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Lansingville Cemetery, 120 North Lansing School Road, Groton, NY 13073 and/or Hospicare, 172 E. King Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
