Born September 26, 1941, in Gouverneur, NY, she was one of seven children of the late James and Evelyn (Burns) Hays. A 1959 graduate of Gouverneur High School, Lorraine was married on June 17, 1961, to John R. "Jack" Dickhaut, who survives her. Lorraine retired from Smith Corona after 30 years of service, and then spent 11 years employed at Cornell University.
Her greatest pleasure came from time spent with family. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister whose strong presence will be missed a great deal. Lorraine was a member of the Moravia Downs Trotting Association, where she served as secretary for many years, she had coached her daughter's softball team, enjoyed tending her flower gardens, and was an avid reader. She also spent a great deal of time researching genealogy with her sisters.
In addition to her parents, Lorraine was preceded in death by her brothers, Leonard, Lawrence and Leslie Hays.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, John "Jack" Dickhaut Jr. of Locke; daughter LauraLee (Scott) Weaver of Lansing; son John "JR" Dickhaut (Lawanda Eaton Hulbert) of Groton; grandchildren, Ashley Weaver, CodyRyan, Dalton-Edward, and John-Robert Dickhaut. Lorraine also leaves her sisters, Lois (Wayne) Billups of Groton, Louise (Dick) Bordonet of Newfield , Lorretta (Bernie) Morse of Freeville; a large extended family, as well as her husband's family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to 6 year old, Krissy Hays (who was diagnosed with leukemia) PO Box 33, Gouverneur, NY 13642.
Family will be present to receive friends from 1 - 3pm, Friday, September 7, 2012, at Lansing Funeral Home, 32 Auburn Rd., Lansing, NY. A memorial service, officiated by Rev. Jeffrey Tunicliff, will begin at 3 pm at the funeral home.
