My break merged with work as I covered the Lions Club picnic at Myers Park. The picnic has been a Lansing tradition for 45 years. The Lions generally stay in the background, not soliciting thanks for the contributions they make to the community, but the events they host are beloved traditions. And their contributions are legion. Equally impressive is the support the community affords them. Despite a weather forecast predicting rain, winds, a cold front and thunderstorms, hoards of people came to take part in the event, and all 1650 pieces of chicken were sold. Even the weather decided to cooperate, perhaps getting caught up in the spirit of the thing.
Aside from ongoing projects like scholarships, glasses and hearing aids for seniors and gifts of many kinds to the community, the Lions have frequently taken on special projects where they see a need. The most recent of these is a band stand for Myers Park. The club had hoped to raise money soon enough to build it before this summer, but plans changed as it became apparent that it would cost more than originally planned. Now the club has raised almost $10,000 and needs more to meet their goal of completing construction next Spring.
So the support the community affords the Lions goes a long way -- toward supporting the community. It was great to see such a crowd despite the weather.
