Today begins the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, which is at the Lansing High School track this year.  Teams from all over the area have been raising funds for the event, and will walk all night to honor cancer victims and survivors and to support the Cancer Society's ongoing quest to research and cure it.

The event is huge, with teams setting up tents, local volunteers running events within the event and this year the national organization will be filming the Lansing event for their publicity campaign. When you see something like this it might be easy to get caught up in the grandness of the event, but the fact is that it is personal for a lot of people.  Indeed it may be so for everyone there.  I've been thinking about people I know who have had cancer of some kind, everything from brain tumors to small melanomas.  Most of the people I know of survived, some with only minor surgery, others with major surgery, chemotherapy and more.  But it is remarkable that they do -- it wouldn't have been possible until recently.

Off the top of my head I can think of a half dozen.  Multiply that by everyone in town and you start to get a sense of what a problem cancer is.  I guess that explains the tremendous turnout this event sees every year.  It will be worth it to come even if you are not on a team.  There are events for everyone, and the enormity of the event is worth seeing.
