The election for the open House seat in the 24th Congressional District could well determine which party controls the House. That should be borne in mind in deciding between Michael Arcuri, the Democrat, and Raymond Mayer, the Republican. Beyond that, Arcuri should be supported because he holds superior positions on energy policy, environmental protection and stem cell research.

Arcuri believes that oil is a finite resource on which we should not base our long-term energy planning. He would support raising fuel-efficiency (CAF Arcuri is committed to protecting the environment, and opposes the Bush administration's roll-back of these protections. He is opposed to drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. In contrast, Meier supports drilling in ANWR; in 2005 he received the second lowest score of any senator from Environmental Advocates of New York.

Arcuri strongly supports allowing the federal government to fund stem cell research that may lead to therapies for serious diseases that are incurable today. Meier, however, supports President Bush's ban on government support for such research.

It is therefore clear that Michael Arcuri merits the support of all who wish to see public policies that would protect our environment, secure our long-term energy supply, and fund research that may lead to cures for some devastating diseases.
