EditorialEditorialApparently the only national news this week is the dispute over Anna Nicole Smith's remains and custody of her child, and the really big news that Britney Spears shaved her head.  If you scan CNN, Fox, MSNBC and the other national news outlets that's about all you'll hear about, though they do take a moment here and then to talk about Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan.

Fox News noted this morning that it David Geffen has sparked open warfare between Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton when he criticised the Clintons Hilary's camp demanded that Obama apologize.  I liked this story, because of the illogic of it.  Some Hollywood guy mouths off about one candidate, who then claims it is the other candidate's fault.  But they didn't dwell on it - the Smith court proceedings were much more interesting.

And why shouldn't they be?  That story has sex, drugs, and billions of dollars.  Or a half billion.  Or something.  Plus it sports the chattiest judge in the known universe.  So you can imagine how thrilled I was to lear that Hollywood.com is reporting that Anna Nicole allegedly reached out to Britney via a personal video she sent her.  There is a satisfying tidiness to the news when it interconnects like that!

Even Jay Leno commented Tuesday on how absurd it is that the two lead stories for nearly a week have been such vapid tabloid fare.  I guess it cuts into his opportunities to make up jokes when so-called real life is funnier than his monologue.

I have decided to take a glass-is-half-full approach to these stories.  As they say, 'no news is good news.'  So at least on the national front I would say that we're in pretty good shape.  Because there has been absolutely no national or world news since these circuses began.
