LettersLettersDear Editor:

Editor's Note: People with events should enter them directly into our free Events Calendar.
I really appreciate being able to receive the "Lansing Star" each Friday, as it brings back many memories of my younger growing up years.

I was looking at the calendar for July-2010, and did not notice when the Lansing High School re-union was being held, as it has always been either the 1st or 2nd weekend, at the Rod & Gun Club, in Ludlowville.

When I attended Lansing High School, and was in the class of 1959, I can still see when I would walk the hill to school, from Myers, except when it was either cold or raining, or with lots of snow on the ground.

I am a lover of trains, and would watch the local train come from Ithaca on a daily basis, and sometimes get to ride to Miliken Station, and to this date I still model "trains", in the "HO" guage. I custom paint freight cars, and do have some of the Lehigh Valley freight cars, and locomotives.

I can remember when the "Black Diamond" ran from Buffalo to New York City, going thru Ithaca, every day in the afternoon, on the west side of Cayuga Lake, (now abandoned).  I have a model of this passenger train in a display case), but the local freight still comes up the east side of Cayuga, sometimes twice a day. My dad's home was in Ladoga Park, a short walk to the depot (now also gone), and our address then was 12 Ladoga Park Way, and my dad had been on the board at the older high school then.

My wife and I do every now and then get back to the high school re-union, but we could not make it for the 50th anniversary, last year.

My sister married her sweetheart, who is Everett Hunt, and they live in Santa Barbara, Ca.,and they have been there since the late 70's, and I live in Boise, Id. The weather in Boise is of a dry climate, and is around 2500' above sea level. The summers get very hot, but with very little humidity, one does not really feel the heat, as you would in Lansing, or its surrounding area. The same goes for the winters. There is snow on the mountain top, called "Bogus Basin", but here in Boise, no snow to mention about -- Oh don't get me wrong it does snow here, but does not normally last long.

When my wife and I do get back to the Lansing area, many fond memories come back to me, as I was not married when I lived there. We would visit my old homestead, and look out onto the lake, and I still remember sailing on Cayuga, lots of fishing, and sometimes swimming all day long -- oh those were the days...  Being as I am still a lover of trains, I do remember walking the tracks, on a daily basis, sometime to Cargill Salt, Portland Point, and there used to me a small general store in Myers, where the mail would come in, and I would walk the tracks there too, much safer than the road, as I knew when the train would be around.

I guess I have taken up enough of your time, but just wanted to let you know, I still miss the Lansing area.

A few of the folks in my class of 1959, are Dale Nichols, Dale Campbell, Darrell Bacorn, Beth Bacorn, Sharon Artgetsinger (Dale Campbell's wife), Kathy Kelly, and Floyd Wilson, to name a few.

Have a great day, and thanks again for allowing myself to be part of the Lansing Star & News,

Ken Young
