mailmanI now think it's time for us all to re-read Brave New World.  The re-power cayuga signs have irritated me for a while because of the slogan 'the future is now'.  This is absurd - the future is far from now.  It will certainly be shaped by our present day decisions, but the future will undoubtedly be quite different from the present.

This is one reason why the decisions made about the power plant are so crucial, and require us all to think about the long term impacts.  Saying that the future is now limits thinking to focus only on our immediate needs.  It is nice to have a solid tax base from industry to support our Lansing schools.  But, what about conditions for the next generation of students and citizens in Lansing and in the entire area?   What about the air that they will breathe, the water they will drink, and the costs they will pay for electricity?
