xcountryLast week marked the first week of competition for Lansing's cross country teams, but the athletes have been hard at work for well over a month.  They began their preseason not only with early morning practice sessions but also by hosting the Lighthouse 5K at Myers Park on August 20th which fielded nearly 200 runners.  With several weeks of training under their belts, the teams were eager to toe the line in interscholastic competition.

Lansing headed to Newark Valley for their first IAC league meet against the host school as well as Elmira Notre Dame and Whitney Point.  The modified Lansing boys' team won their race by eleven points, running strong from start to finish and led by Teddy Brenner who was followed closely by Sam Bell and Caden Michalec in a 1-2-3 sweep.  Rounding out modified scoring for Lansing was Max Wakshlag and Arjun Kodali.  Newark Valley's Josh Blazey took the top spot in the varsity boys race, leading his team to their first win of the season. While Lansing's varsity boys do not yet have a full team, individual blue and gold runners ran to faster finishes than in their first race last year, a sign of growth for the program.  Varsity Lansing girls faced tough competition, placing third against Newark Valley and Elmira Notre Dame as those two teams battled it out for the win with Newark Valley taking the overall top place by five points.  Newark Valley's Marissa Silba won the girls race with Elmira Notre Dame's Chase Yoder taking second.  Lansing's Mikaela Garcia, Leigh Miller, and Teresa Garcia all placed within the top ten.

The Bobcats traveled to the Owego Invitational over the weekend where many Lansing runners would race to season or lifetime best times.  The modified boys team lined up first and came away with fifth place behind Troy, Wyalusing, Northeast Bradford and Chenango Forks.  Brenner and Michalec came away with medals for their individual finishes in the top 20 out of a field of 75.  Varsity Lansing boys lowered their times significantly in a race that was won by Watkins Glen, led by overall winner Patrick Hazlitt.  The Ladycats faced off against Newark Valley and Elmira Notre Dame once again along with seven other teams in a field of nearly 90 runners.  Newark Valley took the overall win with Nichols and Lansing taking home trophies for their second and third place team finishes.  The Garcia sisters and Miller took home medals for their individual finishes as well.

In their second league meet of the season, Lansing, Moravia, Dryden, Spencer Van Etten-Candor (SVEC), and DeRuyters faced off on a very challenging route at the Fillmore Golf Course. SVEC's Julia Russell won the girls race with Lansing's Mikaela Garcia taking the runner up position. Lansing varsity girls won the team competition with just 27 points, placing their top seven in front of second place SVEC's fourth runner.  Dryden came in third as a team followed by DeRuyters.  In the varsity boys race, SVEC, Dryden, and hosting team Moravia were in a close race for the team win with SVEC claiming victory and DeRuyters Patrick Moade winning the individual competition. Lansing's Liam Hulsebosch and Sean Ross both placed in the top ten. Modified boys and girls raced together to close out the night on a winding course, a good preparation for all competitors as they look to future meets.

Lansing's varsity runners are heading to the McDaniel-Baxter Pre-State Invitational this weekend at Chenango Valley State Park, host of this years NYSPHSAA Championships.  On October 5, the team will be hosting their only home meet of the season at their new home course on the Lansing Center Trail.
