It has been an interesting season for the LadyCat swimmers. For the 2nd season in 3 years the young women are saddled with no home pool due to repairs to the Lansing Natatorium. Coach Diane Hicks-Hughes and Assistance Coach Shelly Matheny have had to use a combination of facilities to practice their squad.
The team has had to use a myriad of alternate facilities including the Ithaca Swim Club, TC3 and Ithaca High School. The lack of a permanent home leads to other distractions, including coordinating use times, transportation and communication amongst the athletes and parents. The level of added stress on the team is not typically seen for the varsity squad.
The lack of home water has not put a damper on the ladies enthusiasm to compete. Pool issues aside, Senior Captains – Grace Ferris, Michele Romano, Lexi Ryan, Krista Taylor and Katie Weaver are all well aware of the tradition of winning at Lansing. The streak of 3 undefeated seasons preceding their leadership looms large and as several of them have been on the team since they were freshman when the streak began the thought of going out never having lost a meet is tantalizing. The seniors also know when you are on top the competition is coming for you and the captains are eager to defend their regular season title. Buoyed by a strong group of returning veterans as well as some excellent new talent, the team is poised to do well again this season and meet those challenges.
