ImageThe Lansing tennis squad split a pair of matches this week, dropping their first contest of the season to Elmira-Notre Dame 7-0 on Tuesday, and returning with a decisive 7-0 win over Southern Cayuga on Wednesday.

The Bobcats’ performance at Elmira on Tuesday reflected a week’s hiatus from tennis for most of the players due to spring break and inclement weather which kept them from court practice on Monday.  Singles players Tyler Engels, Dan Zarate, Jesse Ingalls, and Jonathan Sun were all defeated in two sets.  The doubles teams of Lydia Warkentin and Nicolo Gentile, Ashley Schuster and Keenan Hughes, and Ashley Fleming and Josh McGiff also dropped their matches in two straight sets.

In an afternoon of rain, wind, and less-than spring-like temperatures, Lansing made a strong comeback in its match against Southern Cayuga at home on Wednesday with scores that mirrored Tuesday’s performance only with the Bobcats winning every contest in two straight matches.  The singles squad of Engels (6-0, 6-2), Zarate (6-4, 6-2), Ingalls (6-2, 6-1), and Sun (6-1, 6-1) blanked their competition.  In the doubles matches, Warkentin paired with classmate Mary Bacorn to defeat their opponents 6-4, 6-2, while McGiff and Hughes, and Fleming and Schuster were victorious, winning straight sets at  6-1, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2 respectively.

The Bobcats, now 4-1 for the season, continue play this week with two home matches.  Thursday they take on Watkins Glenn in a contest rescheduled from earlier in the season, and Friday they play Odessa Montour.  Four matches in five days is a tough schedule, but fortunately the team is strong and has a deep, flexible pool of players to rotate through the lineup.
