ImageThe Lansing U12 Blue baseball team enjoyed a successful season, winning 11 of their 16 games.  The coaching staff, headed by James Strait, employed a strategy focused on player development that gave all fourteen players an opportunity to play the infield, outfield, and to pitch.

The season began with a tough, one-run victory over Dryden that ended with a rare 1 – 3 – 5 (pitcher to first base to third base) double play turned by Craig, Owen and Brandon.  Jared made a run-saving, diving catch I the fifth to preserve the lead after Eric Eastman had knocked in the go-ahead run with a 2-out base hit.

Strong pitching was a key throughout the season, culminating in a five to nothing shutout of Moravia in Moravia and a no-hitter over Newfield in Newfield thrown by five different pitchers.

Victories were achieved through timely hitting and strong defense from players such as Zarien and Zach.

The season ended with a second place finish in the Ithaca U12 Babe Ruth Tournament.  After dropping the first game of the tournament, Lansing responded with an extra-inning victory over a tough Ithaca team where Greg scored the go-ahead run a on a single by Corbin, who then scored what turned out to be the winning run on a steal of home.  Nick, a nine year old third grader, pitched the seventh inning to earn the victory.

Lansing played three games on the final day of the tournament.  By winning the first two behind the strong overall play of Danny and Luke, excellent pitching of Brandon, and great hitting by Nick, they secured their spot in the championship game.  The championship game was a tough contest against another tough Ithaca team.  Down four to two towards the end of the game, Lansing threatened with the bases loaded, but some strong defense by Ithaca prevented any runs from scoring.
