Marathon's Josh Lincoln scored first off a rebound save from Lansing's Michael Bradford, late in the first half. In the second half, Lansing's Erik Rasmussen was fouled in the box, setting up a PK score by Joey Skeps. The score was tied 1 to 1 at the end of regulation and the game was extremely well played by both teams.
The rules regarding ties changed for high school soccer this year. There are now two 10 minute period overtimes that can end in sudden death. With just under two minutes left in the second overtime, Lansing's Joe Skeps dug out a ball along the sidelines and dumped it into the box, where teammate Anthony Fiorille fought off two Marathon defenders to gain control of the ball and touched it to Ethan Kutler who sent the winning soft ball past the Marathon goalie, who had charged the play attempting to break up the scrum.
Lansing had 12 shots on goal to Marathon's 10. Lansing's Bradford had 7 saves and Marathon's goal tender, Evan Holl had 8 saves in the game.
Up next for Lansing boys soccer: Southern Cayuga, Friday, 9/11 at Southern Cayuga (4:30 p.m.) and Whitney Point, 9/15 at Lansing (4:30 p.m.).
