ImageThe Girls Varsity Soccer Team was at its potent best again in victories over IAC rivals Marathon and Dryden. The Lady Cats defeated the defending Class "C" Co-State Champs Marathon by a score of 3-0 last friday afternoon at Sobus Field. Senior Ellyn Grant-Keane scored the games first goal on an assist from junior Kathryn Hornibrook in the 29th minute.

After some precise neat passing at the top of Marathons penalty box, Hornibrook released Grant-Keane to her left who then proceded to score over the Marathon goalkeepers right shoulder. Lansing continued to apply pressure with no second goal coming in the half.

Lansing started the second half with a renewed sense of urgency. High pressuring the #1 ranked Class "C" team all over the field and whipping the ball amongst themselves, the Lady Cats pressed forward in search of their second. Senior Mary Bacorn flicked a ball onto the path of a streaking Hornibrook, who with a defender on her side beat the Marathon keeper to her low right corner from 12 yards out in the 64th minute. Eight minutes later and with 8 minutes to go, Bacorn again provided the final pass to set up the Lansing final score. This time she played a little 1-2 combination with junior Taylor Jordan. Jordan picked the ball up 45 yards from the Marathon net, dribbled by two defenders and unleashed a left-footed rocket to the upper left corner from 20 yards.  Lansing shut the game down with its ball possession and stellar defending led by senior goalkeeper M.C. Barrett. Barrett had her 4th shutout of the year while being forced to make only one save.

Next up for the girls was a visit to Dryden. There was no need to amp the team up for this encounter as Lansing has decisively had the edge over its neighbor the last few years. In display of speed and power, techniques and tactics, the Lady Cats mauled Dryden 7-0 this past tuesday. In the 3rd minute Lansing showed its teeth and their intentions. As so often they do, the team got on the board early with its first goal. Sophomore Tiffanie McIntosh made a 50 yard sprint outracing her mark. She arrived just before the space just inside the Dryden penalty box was closed by another Dryden defender. There she met a perfectly weighted ball being delivered by Hornibrook. McIntosh with her first touch, smashed the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. In a tough, physical encounter it took Lansing another 17 minutes to score again. This time the goals would come in bunches. Hornibrook was at her most lethal and in a 3 1/2 minute stretch, scoring three times. The first from junior Nina Lindberg, the second unassisted, the last from strike partner Grant-Keane. 4-0 Lansing. Barrett was her usual sure-handed self in making 4 saves.

The second half saw the ladies come out more focused on their ball movement and more fluid and patient in their attacks. The midfield led by senior Lydia Warkentin and sophomore McIntosh, continued to probe Dryden for openings. In the 55th minute and again in the 73rd, Hornibrook turned provider first to Jordan and then to Grant-Keane for a 6-0 Lansing lead. McIntosh finished the scoring on a pass from Grant-Keane in the 78th minute.

The team was not immune to the flu-bug floating around as three of them were not present in school on monday. It speaks highly of the recuperative powers of a rivalry game. The girls are now 6-0 for the season and in the just released New York State Rankings are #2 in Class "B" behind only Briarcliff, the two-time defending state champs. Lansings next home game is wedsnesday the 30th @ 4:30 versus Union Springs.
