ImageThe Lansing Board of Education took a break from the bleak business of working on the 2010-2011 budget Monday night to pass a resolution of recognition of Kyle Dake, who won the NCAA Division 1 Wrestling Championship last Saturday (3/20), and his father, Lansing wrestling coach Doug Dake.  Kyle was a two-time New York State champion while wrestling champion while at Lansing, and Doug was an Ohio State high school wrestling champion.

"I got a phone call from Cornell indicating that he was the first freshman that has ever qualified as a national NCAA champion in any sport," said school board member Richard Thaler.  "I recommend indicating that Mr. Dake did scholastically well enough at Lansing to get into a university such as Cornell.  He maintained himself as a scholar as well as an athlete."

Kyle, now a freshman at Cornell University, defeated Iowa's Montell Marion 7-1 in the 141 pound finals at the Quest Center in Omaha, Nebraska Saturday night.  This season he has wracked up 22 wins and only two losses.  Marion, a sophomore, has a 27-5 record for the season.  He finishes the season 34-2.

On Monday Kyle was named EIWA (Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association) Freshman of the Year.  EIWA officials noted that Dake was the first true freshman to win a national title since Minnesota's Dustin Schlatter won the title in 2005.  He has also been named named first-team All-Ivy and Ivy League Rookie of the Year.  While at Lansing he won the State Championships two of the three times he earned a spot as a finalist.

Resolution of Recognition

Whereas Kyle Dake is a CLass of 2009 Graduate of Lansing High School and a freshman at Cornell University, and

Whereas Kyle is a two-time New York Wrestling Champion while attending Lansing High School, and

Whereas Doug Dake is Kyle's father and wrestling coach at Lansing Central School District and a former high school state champion og Ohio, and

Whereas Kyle Dake won the 2010 NCAA Division 1 Wrestling Championship at 141 pounds on March 20, 2010, and also recognizes Kyle Dake as a scholar and athlete,

When the Lansing school board passed the resolution unanimously an auditorium of about 200 people burst into applause.

Kyle's brother Corey is also following in the family tradition that spans three generations.  He won second Section IV wrestling title for the second year running, beating Norwich's Tanner Cummings 6-0 in the Final, and placed fourth in the state championship for the second year in a row.  The Lansing team overall placed 6th.

Kyle worked his way to the NCAA championship defeating Missouri's Todd Schavrien 4-1, then Cal State Bakersfield's Elijah  Nacita.  In the quarter finals Dake beat Boise State's Levi Jones 11-0, and in the semifinals Reece Humphrey of Ohio State.  He defeated Marion 7-3
