espn_120Taughannock Media, owners of WPIE-1160 ESPN Ithaca, announced the addition of award-winning sports journalist Brian Delaney to its staff as Reporter and Account Manager.

Delaney joins WPIE after five and a half years at The Ithaca Journal, where the past three years he was Sports Editor of an award-winning section. At The Journal, Delaney orchestrated the daily coverage of three colleges, nearly 20 high schools and such high-profile stories as New York Jets Training Camp at SUNY Cortland. His beat coverage of Ivy League men’s basketball and lacrosse since 2005 garnered multiple individual awards.

“We’re very pleased to have Brian join our team, his knowledge and insight on local sports and teams is exceptional”, stated Todd Malllinson, President/General Manager of Taughannock Media. Mallinson added, “Brian is a proven sports journalist with a passion for getting the story and will be a valuable asset as we continue our commitment to strong local sports coverage.”

Delaney is a 2004 graduate of Ithaca College’s Park School of Communications, and has spent the bulk of the last 11 years as an Ithaca resident. He joined The Journal in October of 2005 as its college beat writer, and worked tirelessly to successfully grow the section, both in online and in print.

“I grew up on a steady diet of sports talk radio, newspapers and more sports talk radio,” Delaney said. “In a short time, Mr. Mallinson and the staff have grown the 1160 ESPN brand into a force in the Ithaca market. I’d like to thank him for this tremendous opportunity, I can’t wait to see what we accomplish together.”

Delaney will take on a few key roles at WPIE. He will co-host “Between the Lines,” WPIE’s local drive time show airing weekdays 4-5pm anchored by Operations Manager Matt Schultz. Delaney will report and offer analysis on the top local and national sports news of the day, and his writings will be featured at www.1160ESPN.com. Delaney will also be responsible for Key Account development with WPIE, and looking forward to participation in community leadership opportunities.
