The seniors set pace for the Cats as they jumped out to a 5-2 lead on the strength of 4 aces, 3 by Hannah Armstrong. A 5-0 Dryden run gave them a 7-4 advantage as the teams stayed close the entire way. Lansing finally tied the core at 19 for the 6th and final time on a Keara Lowenhar service point. She then hit a scorching ace to give the home club the lead for good at 20-19. A deep kill by senior Jada Gooch and follow up kill by senior Shalyn Watson made it 23-21. Junior Sam Detrick added a Kill for good measure as the Cats won the opening game 25-20.
Dryden built an early 3-0 lead in game 2 before Lansing went on a 6-0 run to take the lead led by 2 aces from Kelsey Thomas. Balanced offense was the key in game two as Thomas, Watson helped build a 14-7 margin. From there it was the play of Armstrong & Thomas who tallied several nice returns, a Armstrong block to expand the advantage to 24-15 before a Keara Lowenhar ACE finished out the game with a convincing 25-15 victory.
The Bobcats again fell behind 3-0 in game 3 and at one point trailed 7-2. But the senior class stood tall, as 3 consecutive Jada Gooch aces tied the game at 10. The teams were tied at 14, 15, 16 and 17, before the Purple Lions took a 4 point margin at 21-17. From there it was a tremendous Bobcat surge, 8 straight points including a Armstrong Block, Watson Kill and 2 Keara Lowenhar aces, the latter to finish the match in a come from behind 25-21 victory for the 3-0 sweep of their arch rivals.
The W was clearly the teams best effort in the young season.
"It was good competition and we played really well," said Bobcat coach Brenda Powers. " We had a good mixture of plays and hits. They finished it today, the actually did it."
At 2-1 on the year the Cats will return to league action next Tuesday, September 11th, when they travel to Southern Cayuga in search of their 3rd straight victory.
The much anticipated season for the Lansing girls varsity volleyball team opened last week with 2 IAC games over a three day period prior to the start of the school season.
On Tuesday, August 28th, the Lady Bobcats began play against their long time rival and defending IAC champion Trumansburg Blue Raiders on the road. The Cats started slowly down 9-1 in the first game and could never chip into the deficit falling 25-13. The next 3 games would all prove to be thrillers however.
Game 2 saw the visitors jump out to a 10-2 lead led by seniors Kelsey Thomas, Hannah Armstrong and Keara Lowenhar, the later who had 5 straight service pints in a 6-0 run that built the 8 pt lead. T-Burg roared back to tie the game at 17, the teams tied again at 20 and 21 before strong hits by seniors Jada Gooch and Megan Judd the later with the game winner in a thrilling 25-23 win.
With the match tied at 1-1 game 3 was equally exciting as the teams went back in forth tied at 7-7, 15-15, 19-19, 20-20 and 25-25 before the home team tallied the last 2 for a tough 27-25 setback. Game 4 saw Lansing jump out to a 4-0 margin as Thomas and Armstrong combined for a spike and an ace. The teams were deadlocked at 19 all, Lansing went ahead 22-20 before the Raiders tied the score at 22. A Jada Gooch power return made it 24-23 Cats but again neither team could get separation tied three more times at 24, 25 and 26 before the Raiders broke through for another nail biter 28-26 triumph to win the match 3 games to 1. Despite the setback the girls felt good about their effort over the last 3 games and eagerly look forward to the rematch at home on September 27th.
On Thursday, August 30th, the girls traveled to Moravia for its second straight IAC match up. The Cats were ready from the start racing out to a 8-0 lead in game 1, as Kelsey Thomas and Hannah Armstrong combined for the first 8 including 2 kills and 2 aces. Leading 9-4 Lansing got 4 consecutive aces from Armstrong, who clearly showed why she is a leading candidate for conference player of the year, and led 13-4 and never looked back in a easy 25-8 Game 1 victory.
Game 2 was also a strong one as the Cats raced to a 7-0 lead, and built a 15-5 margin with balanced scoring from its seniors including Armstrong, Thomas, Jada Gooch and Keara Lowenhar. Late int the contest the senior leadership continued with 5 straight points including 3 aces by Shayln Watson as the Cats cruised to a 25-11 victory.
Game 3 saw coach Brenda Powers start 5 new players and the Cats fell behind early 10-3. Once again it was veteran play to lead them back, as Armstrong and Thomas helped Lansing Rally back to tied the score at 18. The teams were tied again at 21,before a Armstrong push shot gave them the lead for good as they held off Moravia 25-23 to sweep the home team and even its overall record at 1-1. Next up for the varsity the home opener on Tuesday, September 4th against Dryden.
On the JV front the Lady Cats also notched their first win of the young season with a sweep of Moravia, 25-12, 27-25 and 25-12.
