volleyball2_120The Lansing varsity girls volleyball team captured their third straight victory on Tuesday, September 11th, with a hard fought three games to one road triumph over IAC section 4 foe Southern Cayuga.

In game game the Bobcats jumped out to an early 13-2 lead led by seniors Keara Lowenhar and Jada Gooch who combined for 7 points including 2 kills and 3 aces as Lansing in that stretch scored 9 consecutive points.  The hometown Chiefs closed to within 5 pts at 16-11 & 17-12 but in the end fell 25-17.

Game two proved to be a struggle throughout as there were 6 ties and 6 lead changes overall.  Tied at 11, the Chiefs then scored the next 5  to lead 16-11. Again the two rivals went back and forth before a 7-0 Lansing run, highlighted by 4 Hannah Armstrong aces and a Jada Gooch kill gave the Cats a 19-17 margin, one which they would not give up.  A Gooch rocket return, Lowenhar ace and poor return play  by the home club helped the cats rally from 5 down to win game 2 25-18.

Game three was a sluggish affair as Lansing fell behind quickly 4-0. A Armstrong spike tied the game at 11, the all conference dynamo then blocked a return to knot the score again at 13, before Southern Cayuga surged ahead to lead 17-14. Down 2 at 19-17 again it was Armstrong who had a Kill and spike to deadlock the score at 19. The clubs were tied again at 22, 23, 24 and 25, before the home team scored the final 2 in a tough 27-25 win. Overall  the game featured 10 ties and had 10 lead changes.

Game four saw Lansing take control early with a fast 4-0 advantage on service points by senior Kelsey Thomas. Coach Brenda Powers used more of her bench in this one, but the seniors led the way. Shalyn Watson and Meghan Judd combined for 4 pts, Thomas added a rocket return and a fierce ace by Jada Gooch helped the Cats build a 13-4 advantage.  The visitors would then go on another 6-0 tear as Armstrong and Gooch tallied 4 kills and a spike, to complement the outstanding serving of cat junior Kaleigh Hotchin. Fellow junior Annie Reynolds also got quality minutes as Armstrong closed out the match with back to back aces, the final one a JUMP ace in a 25-11 victory.

At 3-1 on the season Lansing returns home this Thursday to play Whitney Point.
