basketballcourt_120On a seasonally warm Friday evening, the Bobcats Varsity boys basketball team remained hot. The Wolves of Union Springs traveled down the lakeside seeking their first win of the season. The enthusiasm of the Lansing cheerleaders and a supportive student body becoming affectionally known in the sporting community as the Lansing "Lunatics" had reason to cheer early in the game.

Lansing Center Ben Rourke had four steals and 14 points in the opening quarter alone. Union Springs countered with some exceptional play of Kenny Morhiser netting 12 points for the game and his teammate Cody Halverson adding a couple of blocked shots. However, any blocks, steals or scores by the Wolves was quickly countered by a balanced Bobcat attack in their 68-42 win.

A home crowd highlight occurred in the third quarter when Lansing forward Sam Currie had the ball stolen and hustled the length of the floor for an impressive block of an Austin Thomas shot. Six foot seven inch Lansing sophomore Center Jack Stevens tallied 15 points for the game. Point guard Ellington Hopkins had at least 5 steals to assist himself in scoring 17 points. Six foot five inch Thomas Towner chipped in with nine points, Rourke finished with a game high 20, and Andrew Maul running the point much of the second half contributed 4 points.

In Trumansburg, the Blue Raiders were also seeking a first win of the season and had their full team suited up for the first time all season. Trumansburg has just three seniors on their squad. Lansing raced to a 9-0 lead and maintained a solid cushion throughout. Nate McIntosh set the tone with a trio of three pointers in the first quarter and tallied a game high 20 points. The play was physical throughout with referees using their whistles frequently. For only the third time this season, Lansing was outscored in a quarter as Trumansburg held a 13-11 advantage in the second period.

Trumansburg benefitted from long rebounding efforts and the scoring of forward Alex Shippy. Overall, Lansing's pressing defense produced several steals and disrupted any easy basket attempts in the half court. In this 63-31 victory, Lansing Center Jack Stevens continued steady contribution off the bench with 13 points and Ellington Hopkins also reached double figures. Nick Peters and Andrew Maul capped the game scoring summary with field goals.

Lansing currently leads the IAC Large School North with a division record of 2-0 and an overall 6-0. Whitney Point and Dryden are just one game out in the division race. The Bobcats will host the Fred Caliel Holiday tournament starting with a 12/27 game versus Newark Valley. The other match up for the tournament's opening round pit Trumansburg playing Moravia. Moravia stands undefeated.

The JV boys contest in Trumansburg was a battle between 4-1 division rivals. Lansing prevailed in an exciting fourth quarter comeback by the score of 46-41. Josh Miller-LaBar had a go ahead three pointer and Logan Osterman secured the victory with a couple of key blocks.
