ImageUnited Way of Tompkins County awarded grant funds totaling $85,350 to support current work in the targeted impact area of Hunger and Food Security and to invest in efforts to promote improvement in community conditions. The Community Foundation of Tompkins County’s Tompkins Today and Tomorrow Fund joined this effort to support the Hunger and Food Security by adding $2,500 to increase the funds to $35,500.  The Community Foundation is committed to food program solutions to poverty, a major need identified in the United Way’s COMPASS II needs analysis.

United Way of Tompkins County continues to document an increased demand for food and personal care items and is focusing its efforts on addressing the many complex food and hunger issues. UWTC is working with community nonprofits to support programming to make an impact to improve the quality of life of area residents.

  • Hunger and Food Security Award Recipients – $35,500 including the $2,500 Contribution from Community Foundation of Tompkins County
  • Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga Security: Samaritan Center Personal Care Items - $8,000
  • Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County/Nutrition: Cooking Up Community - $4,500
  • Greater Ithaca Activities Center, Inc.: Youth Program – 50 Served - $12,000
  • Human Services Coalition of Tompkins County Inc.: 2-1-1 Tompkins Resource Card - $1,800
  • Loaves and Fishes of Tompkins County, Inc.: Free Meal Program - $5,000
  • The Mental Health Association in Tompkins County: Starlight Peer Advocacy Program - $4,200

Vicki Taylor, UWTC Fund Distribution Co-Chair added, "We are fortunate to be able to provide funding to these deserving agencies. In these difficult times, the demand for hunger and food security is rising and United Way is pleased to be able to respond to the needs of the community in
a timely manner."

The T. Merrell Shipherd Flexible Fund, named in memory of the former Director of United Way of Tompkins County, who, throughout his life, worked to bring people together to find effective solutions to community challenges, will help to support several health and human service programs. The purpose of this grant award is to provide financial support to quality programming and services and to address new and emerging needs in the community.

  • Family & Children’s Services: Technology for Observation, Consultation and Training - $5,395
  • Greater Ithaca Activities Center, Inc.: Teen Late Night Program - $16,000
  • Human Services Coalition: 2-1-1 Education and Outreach - $3,772
  • Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources (OAR) of Tompkins County: Expanded Transition Program - $7,800
  • The Salvation Army, Ithaca Corps/Friendship Donations Network: Friendship Donation Network - $5,000
  • Suicide Prevention & Crisis Service: Computer Server Replacement - $3,750
  • Tompkins Learning Partners: Adult Literacy - $933
  • Tompkins/Tioga Neighborhood Legal Services: Computer - $700

The Community Foundation is a non-profit public charity by and for the people of Tompkins County. The organization accepts gifts and bequests to a variety of current or new funds.
