sc Sciencenter175Tom Reed announced the Sciencenter Discovery Museum, a hands-on educational center and museum for kids in Ithaca, will receive $381,695 as part of the National Leadership Grants for Museums from the Federal Institution of Museum and Library Services.

"I care about ensuring families throughout the area have access to educational resources, especially when they help our kids get interested in science at such an early age," said Reed. "It's only fair we provide them with the support they need to continue this service to our community."

meeko Are you looking for a fun-loving, happy as can be puppy? If so, choose me! I'm a lab/something mix and absolutely love playing, cuddling with volunteers, and learning new tricks. I'm an exuberant puppy who came in with very few manners, but the trainers at the shelter are teaching me so many fun things! When I get really excited, I start using my mouth to play with you like I would another puppy, so I don't always think about how sharp my puppy teeth are. Because of this, I need to go to a dog-savvy home without children. I play well with other rough and tumble dogs, and would enjoy having a canine playmate at home. After a good play session, I love nothing more than to cuddle in your lap. If I sound like the perfect package, come in and say hello today!

invasivewaterchestnut 120Thanks to sharp-eyed lake scientist Lisa Cleckner of the Finger Lakes Institute, a Water Chestnut plant was spotted in mid-August floating on Cayuga Lake just south of Canoga Marsh on the lake’s northwest shoreline.

The Seneca County Soil and Water Conservation District’s aquatic plant harvesting team scouted the area and located an infestation east of Canoga Marsh approximately ½ acre in size. This area was mechanically harvested, with the plants removed from the lake.

TurtleWaylon Hello, my name is Waylon, but some people here also call me Turtle! I don't know how I ended up here at the SPCA, but isn't it nice that I get yummy food every day? I'm a nice boy who loves to talk about my day to all of our visitors. I'm also quite playful, and will happily entertain you for hours with my antics. Other felines intimidate me, so if you want to take me home, I'd be happiest as the only cat. I have been neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated up-to-date, so if we're the right match, I'm ready to go home with you! Ask an adoption counselor about how to adopt me!

posticon Ice Cream Without Guilt?

Lansing Center TrailPerhaps you have noticed that there is a new bridge over the stream just to the east of the Scoops Ice Cream shop. This bridge, built by volunteers, is part of the Murdock Spur, a new addition to the Lansing Center Trail system.  The Murdock Spur is only 0.2 miles long, but it connects with the Lansing Center Trail. Walkers can choose to cover over 4 miles by taking every option on the Lansing Center Trail, likely enough to walk off at least some of the calories from one of the delicious Scoops ice cream treats. The markers for the Murdock Spur are either yellow posts or ice cream cone blazes.

Allinger added that there will be something new in place of the walk next year. "We're at the very beginning stages of planning the replacement."For now all effort is going into making this the most successful year yet."

Groton School NewsNew Superintendent Takes Challenges in Stride

Groton Central School District is under new leadership as Ms. Margo Martin, former high school principal, CIO and Director of Technology for the Tioga Central School District, stepped into the superintendent position at the beginning of June. Martin has taken the helm of Groton Central Schools with an earnest enthusiasm for the schools growth and development. Within the past five years the district has undergone several changes in its leadership.

She responded to these circumstances by saying, "I am here for the long haul. I am not looking for a stone's hop in my career, I want a small community where I can make my home."

posticon Can You Be Scammed Here In Lansing? Well... Yes

Print Print

scamalert120A robovoice told me calmly but very seriously that my M&T Bank Visa had been used in a suspicious circumstance, and my account had been suspended.  It then explained that I should punch my credit card into into the phone to log into my account to reach the Fraud Department to get it restored.  My fingers reached for the keypad when I heard a voice in my head that said, don't do that!  Hang up!  OK, it was my wife's voice -- I had the call on speakerphone.  Good advice.

I logged into my account on my computer and there was no indication whatsoever that my card had a problem.  And then the robovoice called my wife.  When it called my daughter we knew for sure it was a scam because my daughter does not have an M&T Bank Visa.

solidwaste 120Food scraps recycling has taken hold in Tompkins County, with the Solid Waste Division recently reaching the 2500 mark in the number of tool kits distributed to residents. Additional plans this year include the opening of a seventh residential drop spot for the East Hill area of Ithaca, as well as improvements at the Recycling and Solid Waste Center.

Solid Waste Division Manager Barbara Eckstrom applauds residents for the enthusiasm they've shown in embracing another source of waste diversion. "As we've said, food scraps recycling is the 'next frontier,' and through our efforts at making it clean, comfortable and convenient, we're seeing participation continue to grow," said Eckstrom.
