Habitat for Humanity of Tompkins and Cortland Counties hosted Women Build Weekend on Friday, May 6th and Saturday, May 7th—and it was a smashing success! After raising over $11,000.00 to contribute to the construction costs of Habitat’s current build on Sperry Lane in Lansing, 150 volunteers (almost all women) installed flooring and raised walls for this home.Don Gagnon and two of his daughters—the future owners of this Habitat house—were on site both Friday and Saturday working alongside volunteers to help build their home.

Today and tomorrow is a major shopping event in Lansing, namely the Lansing United Methodist Church Rummage Sale. Scores of volunteers have been working all week to sort and price all kinds of items donated to the sale. Prices on most items are below $5, and on Saturday they are even lower. But the sale isn't just about the merchandise. It's also about the volunteers who make it happen.

A recent fine meal I feel compelled to share: after watching Lansing's JV baseball mow down another opponent Wednesday afternoon, my husband and I felt we had done enough ‘hard work' to earn a meal out on the town. I asked him at the start of the game what he thought we should do about dinner, and he replied mysteriously, "I've got plans".
Saturday saw local Republicans at the town ballfields slinging chicken at the annual Lansing Republicans barbecue fundraiser. Candidates and Lansing Republican committee members alike were manning the barbecues and the sales tent, hoping to fund what promises to be an interesting campaign this year.

For nine years, including Wednesday of this week, Fred Voss has told Lansing High School sophomores what it was like when he was about their age. It wasn't good. That's because Voss was a young Jew in Holocaust-era Germany. Since surviving that atrocity he met the love of his life, immigrated to America, served in the U.S. Army, raised a family, and spent 26 years telling his story in the hope that the kind of hatred Hitler instilled in Germans and the horrifying real-life impact it had on millions of people will not be repeated. English Teacher June Martin says Voss is a highly effective speaker who connects with students in a way they remember their whole lives.
Fresh from final exams, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s student birding team is ready to cut loose on Saturday, May 14, at the 28th annual World Series of Birding in New Jersey. The Redheads (named for Cornell “Big Red” sports team—and a duck species called a Redhead) are two-time champions in the Cape May County division of the competition. Last year’s team identified 175 species. During the World Series, teams converge from across the country to raise funds for bird conservation by collecting pledges for each species tallied by sight or sound during the midnight-to-midnight contest.
