commons_center120An informal survey conducted in Ithaca earlier this month finds that adults significantly underestimate the extent of tobacco product advertising in stores that sell cigarettes, while recognizing that such advertising does have an influence on children. As part of the annual Kick Butts Day, the survey was conducted by Tobacco Free Tompkins to see if local consumers are aware of the targeted marketing and it’s impressions on youth.

posticon Lansing Rod & Gun Club Helps Save a Life

carissaCarissa MosherWhen Lansing Rod & Gun Club members heard that Carissa Mosher is battling cancer, they wanted to help.  Carissa is a Southern Cayuga seven year old who is being treated for Rhabdoid-Sarcoma of the soft tissue.  Saturday club members are hosting a chicken barbecue at the Lansing Ballfields to help Carissa and her family.  It's a birthday gift: Carissa turns eight years old on Monday.

"It's a very fast spreading cancer," says Lansing Rod & Gun Club Treasurer Mary Orr.  "It started in her leg.  Her mother is a single mother with two other children.  She is really going through a very hard time.  Just the emotional part... she is with Carissa 100% of the time."

posticon Supporters Argue for Keeping Lansing School Theater

cats_DSC09117_1202010 LHS production of 'Cats'Superintendent Stephen Grimm painted a depressing picture of budget prospects for the next several years at Monday's Lansing Board Of Education meeting.  With everything on the table, extra-curricular activities are particularly at risk as the board tries to fill a more than two million dollar revenue gap this year.  When the board struggled with decreasing revenues and skyrocketing costs last year a rally to keep the swimming pool and related programs open was a notable part of the proceedings.  While it is early in this year's process, Monday brought avid supporters of the theater program.

"A couple of years ago I was at a school board meeting at which a student said that theater was their sport of choice," said Lansing Theater and Performing Arts Booster Club (LTAPA) board member Bobbi Wasenko.  "That made me stop and think.  We have a field -- it's called our auditorium.  We have a coach, who is our director.  And we have uniforms, but we call them costumes.  One of the great things about our uniforms, that no other team in this school district can do, is that we rent ours out to make money for the student activity fund that pays for the play."

jpanquakeThe Museum of the Earth at the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) has on display a seismogram from the devastating earthquake that hit Japan last week.  The threat of further seismic shifts and tsunamis continue and meteorological agency officials warn of likely aftershocks in the region. The Museum of the Earth is able to track earthquakes in real time using its onsite seismometers.

The March 11, catastrophic event in Japan began as a seismic shift which permanently moved Honshu Island, the island closest to the epicenter of the quake, a distance of 8 feet. The Pacific plate off the coast of Japan, which is slowly but constantly sliding underneath the North American plate, shifted 8 feet in only a few minutes and caused the massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami that enveloped coastal areas.

posticon Recycling Now Easier

recyclingAs of last Monday, county residents can now mix their paper and containers all in one bin, as Tompkins County begins to accept mixed recyclables at the curbside through single stream collection.  Paper, glass, metal, and plastic containers can all be mixed in the bin, making curbside recycling easier and more convenient.

“Single stream recycling makes it easier for residents to recycle more material and get recycling to the curb,” says Leo Riley, Recycling Manager at the County’s Solid Waste Management Division (TCSWMD). “Single stream also creates the potential for the collection of additional types of recyclable material in the future.”
