ithaca_state120Owning a car is more expensive than most people realize. Local not-for-profit Ithaca Carshare helps address the high costs of driving through sharing. Members can make reservations as short as 15 minutes, allowing them to pay for car use only during the times they actually need it.

“When you own a car, you pay for it even when you’re not using it.” explains member Elisabeth Harrod. “Carsharing encourages you to plan ahead and to combine trips, and it also means you don’t ever have to worry about taking a car to the shop.”

posticon Settlers Cabin Could Date From 1790s

millercabin120Last August the North Log Cabin was officially dedicated in its new home in Myers Park.  The cabin was built not long after the Revolutionary war on a military lot near the intersection of Conlon and Searles Roads.  Less than two miles from that spot another cabin was built at around the same time on property now owned by Bill and Kathy Miller.  A settler's cabin, it may have been built in the 1790s by a member of the Bowker family.

"The cabin is certainly one of the oldest buildings in Lansing," says Town Historian Louise Bement.

posticon Lansing Residents Will Get Free Park Entry Stickers

Print Print

myers_entrance120When you drive into Myers Park in season you are stopped while attendants can ask whether you are a Lansing resident.  If you say yes they let you through.  If no, you pay to get in.  This summer that will change.  Lansing residents will receive stickers for their cars that will automatically provide free entrance to the park.  Non-residents will pay three dollars admission.

"The park has been undervalued when you look at the improvements we've made there," says Park Superintendent Steve Colt.  "We're a great deal, but we were too much of a great deal."

posticon Cayuga Nature Center Gets Foxes

Print Print

cnc_foxesCayuga Nature Center (CNC), brought home two new foxes just in time for the holiday season. The two females, originally ranch-raised, come from a rehabilitation shelter in Buffalo NY run by Elyse Able and have been cage mates since being relinquished from a petting zoo. Ms. Able planned to use them to care for orphaned baby kits, but these two independent females had no interest in being foster moms. Both foxes, a red head and a stunning silver haired -- a color only found in foxes bred for their coats -- are around six years old (considered middle aged for a fox). It seems that these two would prefer to spend the prime of their life enjoying their independence and have therefore moved to their new home at CNC.
