posticon Scouts Kick Off Popcorn Sale

ImageLansing Cub Pack 48 and Boy Scouts Troop 48 will be pounding the pavement starting in September as they kick off their annual sale of gourmet popcorn.  The sale will last through mid-October.  The tasty flavors include cheese, caramel and chocolate covered, as well as several varieties of microwave packets.

Troop 48 Scoutmaster, Roger Garnett, indicated that the popcorn sale helps to finance scouting activities for the area council, as well as their individual local scouting unit.   This year, some of the scouts are raising money to attend the National Jamboree in 2010 celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Boys Scouts in North America.

posticon Out and About in the Finger Lakes

ImageIt didn’t take more than a weekend after Labor Day for the fall colors to edge out around the swamps and high places. We travel through Whitney Point and Bainbridge to Albany and back several times a month so changes in the length of day and weather are important to us for safety reasons, but the changing scenery is a big factor in our enjoyment of the trip.

Given all of the variables, the ride home last Thursday afternoon was just about perfect. We had time to stop at the Pine Ridge Grocery just outside of Bainbridge for bulk cheese, oatmeal, and my favorite; chocolate covered coffee beans. The dress and the lifestyle of the people who run the bulk store may be plain, but they have more kinds of fancy candy, sprinkles for baking, and sugar filled treats than I’ve seen anywhere else. The store back ground music is a bit saccharine, but the folks are pleasant and sincerely helpful. On a previous trip when Jim had radiator problems and pulled in there to check, the men offered him a large bucket of water and helped him get back on the road.

ImageDan Veaner Shanghai'd us at the Lansing Harbor Fest gate last month and launched us on a voyage to explore the growing sub culture known as Finger Lakes Foodies. While neither of us is a trained expert on wine and we love home style food as much as a gourmet meal, the great thing about our area is that you can have it all while enjoying some of the best art, music, theatre, and incredible scenery anywhere on the planet. We hope you’ll join us, add you own comments, and give us tips about places you’ve enjoyed roughly in an afternoon’s drive from Lansing.

posticon Rogues Harbor Accepted on National Register of Historic Places

ImageOn August 28th the United States National Park Service made official what Lansing already knew: that Rogue's Harbor Inn is a historical site of national significance.  A year after applying, the local landmark was chosen for a place in the National Register of Historic Places.  Originally called the 'Central Exchange Hotel' when it was built in 1830, the inn has been used as a hotel, department store, restaurant, and country club.  Being part of the National Register cements its place in history and will bring opportunities to preserve the building for future generations.

"It's a prestige thing to be recognized by the National Register - that this place is important and you are taking care of it," says owner Eileen Stout.  "There is some grant money available, too, for exterior preservation and renovations."

Penny, aka Joey
For the second time since it opened in late May, the SPCA Annex at The Shops at Ithaca Mall has reunited a cat with its guardians. The first time, a picture of a cat featured in Tailbearer attracted the attention of his owner. This time, Penny was at the Annex (after a month spent at the SPCA’s Dorothy and Roy Park Pet Adoption Center), waiting for a new home. A member of the Rodgers family of Ithaca saw her distinctive markings and brought the whole family in to take Penny, whose real name turned out to be Joey, home.

ImageI have adapted this recipe from the original recipe I used while On American Hawaii Cruise Line, by adding crispy toasted coconut topping and vanilla extract to the custard to enhance the coconut flavor.

1- 13.5 oz. can coconut milk ( not Coco Lopez )-scrape the lid and use the coconut cream in the can, it’s the best part!
1 equal can of whole milk ( use the empty coconut milk can to measure)
1/3 - ½  cup granulated sugar-depending on how sweet you would like it
5 Tbs. Cornstarch
¼ tsp vanilla
½ cup shredded sweetened coconut, toasted-see below ( do not add this to the custard)
Fresh strawberries of vibrant edible flowers

ImageThe Myers Park band stand was rocking Saturday evening when Luke Kutler and his band held a release party for their new CD.  'Luke Kutler's Acoustic Covers' features 13 songs, 12 written by other artists and one original song by Kutler himself.  The party attracted about 40 fans who came out to hear the band play live.

"This was my attempt to test out some new studio equipment for an album my band is making," Kutler says.  "We recorded cover songs.  However the last song on the CD is called 'Breathing Now.'  It's original and that's going to be on the new CD when it comes out."
