posticon Education Advocacy: How To Prepare for a CSE Meeting

ImageI received a letter from the school inviting me to a CSE Meeting to discuss my child’s eligibility for special education services. What should I do to prepare? What will happen at this meeting?

Every school district has a Committee of Special Education (CSE) whose job is to determine a child’s disability, evaluate for and design an individualized plan, and evaluate the appropriateness and effectiveness of the plan on an annual basis. The school’s obligation goes as far as “finding” children with disabilities. That is, it is the school’s responsibility to identify and provide services for children with disabilities who have not been brought to their attention by parents or guardians. The CSE has a big job with a lot of responsibilities and mandates.

ImageLast week the third annual Women's Expo introduced '20 Outstanding Women You Should Know.'  '20 Women' is the centerpiece of the exposition Cayuga Radio Group hosts each year to celebrate outstanding women in Tompkins County.  Over 80 vendors and more than 1,000 attendees came to the TC3 Sports Complex to be a part of the celebration.

"It's getting better and better every year," says WHCU's Dave Vieser.  "It's nice to be a part of something like this where everybody's smiling and everybody's got a great story to tell.  And the women's stories are amazing.  They're not just outstanding women of Ithaca and Tompkins and Cortland Counties.  They're 20 of the most outstanding women in New York State, if not the nation."

posticon Texting and Driving Leads to Death in Mock Crash

ImageThere is nothing like seeing your classmates and friends lying in the road bloody -- some taken away by ambulance, others in body bags deposited into a hearse, and others taken away in handcuffs -- to make you think twice about text messaging while driving.

That's what Lansing High School students saw yesterday when they ran outside from an assembly to view a fatal two car accident on the road next to their school.  At least that's what the Lansing Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) members wanted their classmates to think they were seeing.

"Even though some of the kids in school knows it's coming, it hits them really hard," says SADD Advisor Kevin Wyszkowski.  "The way the characters are made up it's too real for me.  It's too gruesome, something you never want to see.  It's amazing how 400 plus students are completely silent for that.  They see what could potentially happen to their friends."

Image "Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional."-Chili Davis. Right now, 65 and older is the fastest growing demographic in the country. Unfortunately, significant decline in muscle mass, for both men and women, occurs between ages 50 and 69 and is most dramatic after the age of 70. As of 2006, adults over 75 were nearly three times as likely as those age 65-74 to require the help of another person in performing activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, or bathing, and instrumental activities of daily living such as household chores or shopping (www.cdc.gov). The good news is that exercise participation can reverse the loss of function regardless of when a person becomes active.

posticon Eagle Helps Lansing Scout Bikers

ImageLansing Troop 48 got an unexpected challenge from mother nature, their first night out biking the Delmarva Peninsula over spring break.  The troop traveled 7 hours from Lansing to find the first night's 'primitive area' campsite at Holt's Landing State Park near Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, under water from a strong coastal storm.   The scouts moved to an open pavilion at the regular camp sites along side the bay only to see 4 foot waves crashing the Indian River Bay shoreline and wind gust over 30 mph.

Remembering that a few cars were outside and the lights were on at the Millville Volunteer Fire Company, Scout Master Roger Garnett and Assistant Scout Master Mike Coles backtracked with the group of 10 scouts and five adult leaders to ask for help.  The leaders were met at the door by volunteer fireman Cody Lockwood.  Upon learning of their dilemma, Lockwoodsaid, “ I am an Eagle Scout. I will find you a place to stay.”

ImageThe Tompkins County Quilters’ Guild turns 35 this year.  In November 1975, Ithaca Area women led by Jeanne Greene got together to share their knowledge and love of quilting and to organize a regional quilt show, the Finger Lakes Bicentennial Quilt Exhibit held in Ithaca in July of 1976.

This seminal show with its workshops, demonstrations, lectures, and exhibit of over 600 quilts became a blueprint for other quilt shows.  It drew visitors and quilters from across the country as well as international attendants.  Some of the country’s top quilters and enthusiasts met at the show.

posticon Fitness: Is Your Immune System Worried?

Print Print
Pin It
ImageNow that we all know about swine flu, is it time to start walking around with face masks and wiping every surface we touch? You may be worried but you should really consider if your immune system is worried. A strong immune system is essential at fighting off infection, disease, stress, etc. Now may be the time to strengthen your immune system which is all about going on the offense, defense, or both.

Go on the offense by giving your body what it needs nutritionally for a healthy immune system. Most people already know that antioxidants are necessary for a strong immune system: vitamins C, A, E, and beta-carotene. Antioxidants are your body's natural defense against free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that are missing or possess an extra electron and because of this they steal electrons from your tissues. They essentially scramble the structure of proteins, fats, and DNA/RNA. Get your antioxidants through a good variety of fruits and green vegetables.
