posticon Triphammer Road Update

Lansing Village Mayor Donald Hartill reported that all the base paving on Triphammer Road is now complete, and with luck the final coat will be applied before the end of September.  "I've been promised that within two weeks they'll do the final coat," Hartill said in a Village Trustees meeting Monday.

The paving project requires at least two warm and dry days, which is never a certainty in Ithaca.  But once the paving is complete, finishing touches will be all that is left.  Installing and hooking up street lights and landscaping are planned, including at least beginning to plant trees later this year.  "It's actually a good time to do it, because they will be dormant at that point," Hartill said.  "The grass may not be seeded, but we will be in good shape for the winter."

Go up the hill past Bill Cook's dealership behind the Triphammer Mall, and follow Uptown Road to the right and you will come upon the Village of Lansing's two parks.  A small park for children is on the right, and on the left is Philip R. Dankert Park.  While many such municipal landmarks are named posthumously, Phil Dankert is very much alive, continuing to give back to his community after almost 30 years of volunteerism.

 Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

My grandmother volunteers at a local senior citizens center. They often receive baked goods, bread, canned fruit and vegetables and seasonal items that are approaching or have past the expiration date. These foodstuffs are placed out on tables for the seniors to choose from and take home. After everyone has gotten their chance at the stuff, the seniors have a second go round and are allowed to take an extra helping. This is permitted since anything left over goes into the dumpster. Grandma often drops off a “goodie bag” at our home. Is it ethical for her to do this? Should we tell her not to drop off these items since they are not intended for our use?

Just wondering,

Lucky

State of the Art Cancer Screening Device, used in Ithaca, NY Dentist Office

Mortality rates associated with oral cancer have remained unchanged for over 30 years, partly due to the limitations of white light examination of the oral mucosa. This has created a dire need for an improved oral mucosal screening procedure that would make it possible for clinicians to accurately identify tissue changes at and below the surface before they become apparent under white light examination.

Last Saturday it was hard to find a parking space on Town Barn Road as buyers swarmed into Lansing for the 10th annual municipal auction.  Or is it the 15th?  Nobody can remember.  Auctioneer Roy Teitsworth does know he's been bringing his operation here for a long time.  "This is a neat, well attended local auction," he says.  "We like coming here."

Mahogany GrillMahogany GrillReview

Sometimes the best things are the silver lining of a failed intention. Our review of the Mahogany occurred because of just such a fateful event. My husband Matthew and I were returning from a trip to my mother’s house in Connecticut. It was our anniversary and we hoped to find a delicious dinner somewhere at the end of this tiring day. Discussing the options, we finally agreed to return to The Blue Stone Café, because we knew we would find the level of quality that we were looking for (I had also had had a steak craving for a month). We drove downtown to Blue Stone only to find it closed for the day (Ah yes… Monday), what to do now?

There are many good options downtown, quite a few excellent options, but we were too tired to take more than a couple of steps. The Mahogany Grill? The menu looked right for our needs, interesting pasta dishes and beef in various forms, but what about that horrible dining experience we had had there 3 years ago?.. Matthew had eaten some decent business lunches there since that time, proximity won the argument- in we went. From the first moment we entered The Mahogany Grill, it was a premier dining experience.

posticon Lansing Says Goodbye to Kirk Shreve

Kirk D. ShreveKirk D. ShreveThis past couple of weeks has been a very sad week in Lansing.  Marion Thompson passed away on August 24th, followed by 22 year old Charlie Moon.  Both funerals were handled by Kirk Shreve, owner of Lansing Funeral Home.  Then last Saturday morning the 49 year old Shreve himself passed away, leaving the Lansing community in shock.

Hundreds of friends payed their respect at Lansing Funeral Home Tuesday, with lines of people stretching along the side of the building and a Sheriff's Deputy directing traffic well into the night.  On Wednesday more than 200 family, including his partner and companion of 26 years, Dr. Alexander Wood, and extended family members from his church and the Rotary and Lions clubs packed Lansing United Methodist Church for the funeral, to say their last goodbye to a man who has become so ingrained in the community that many wondered aloud how Lansing will recover from his loss.  Click here for his obituary,  here for this week's editorial about Kirk,  and here for our May story on Shreve.
