posticon Triphammer Construction to Resume

Print Print

You may have noticed that road construction on the Triphammer project came to a virtual halt and traffic has been flowing fairly smoothly for the past few weeks.  That's because Suit-Coat, the contractor on the job, has been helping with disaster recovery in Binghamton after the flood there on June 28.  "It was an emergency situation," explains Village of Lansing Mayor Donald Hartill.  "They asked us whether that would be OK and we said, 'Yes.'"

Pyramid Drive will be widened and divided into five lanes to accommodate through traffic as well as turn lanes.

posticon Using Grasses in Your Garden

Dan SegalDan SegalMost gardeners peruse some green websites, read some kind of gardening magazines, or scan the home and garden section in newspapers. For the last several years grasses have enjoyed high profile status. Unless you have 'issues' with the grasses, you've probably either considered planting some, or even tried a few. Recently I spoke with two gardeners in the same day, both of whom had horror stories of grasses behaving badly--one running amok, the other going awry... What I gathered was that their bad grass experiences left them fearfully assuming all grasses were destined to spread indefinitely, overtaking every living thing before moving on to devour the inanimate foundations of garage, home and neighborhood.

"Except for the rain the Tompkins County Relay for Life was absolutely amazing from beginning until the end," said an exhausted American Cancer Society Staff Partner Allison Knoth as she stood in the rain on the now empty Lansing High School track Saturday morning. "Other than the thunder and lightning the participants had fun, the activities were incredible, our luminaria ceremony was absolutely beautiful."

 Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

I just submitted my two-week notice at work. The boss wants me to complete an exit interview. Do you think I should do it? Will it ever be used against me? Are my concerns legitimate?

Thanks,
Rick

Dear Rick,
This is a tricky one. An exit interview, sometimes called exit survey, is a meeting between a representative from a company's human resources department (HR) and a departing employee. The departing employee usually has voluntarily resigned (as in your case) rather than getting laid off or fired. The HR rep might ask the employee questions while taking notes, asks the employee to complete a questionnaire, or the interview may be a combination of both.

Everyone say’s that I’m a loveable girl. The only thing is that I love kitties a little too much so I probably shouldn’t have any near me. Please come to the S.P.C.A. and meet me, I’m sure you’ll fall in love!

posticon Parables at Myers Park

Print Print
Pin It
Worship ColumnParables, stories told to illustrate religious ideas, have been around since Biblical times, so their use by is in keeping with the custom many faiths use in teaching and reaching out to the community. That is the reason “Parables in the Park” is being held every Wednesday night through August 9 at Lansing’s Meyers Point Park by Trinity Lutheran Church of Ithaca.

This is the first year Trinity has held evening services at Meyers, though a well-attended Easter service at Stewart Park in Ithaca is an annual event. It, too, is a reaching out and a successful one at that: about half the attendance is customarily from the community at large.

posticon Call for Books for the Library

The Lansing Community Library Center is having a big to-do fundraiser August 5th. As part of that a few of us are organizing a mini book sale for the same day. The book sale will run 12-5 that Saturday, probably in a part of the community center. The thing we need now are books! Specifically Fiction (all ages) and Children's Books. As this is a mini book sale, we are limiting the tables to those two catagories. Attached is a flyer for the call for books.

And remember- a book donated to the Lansing Library has three chances to be of service. First chance: it may go on the shelves to be a part of the library inventory. Second chance: it goes into the book sale and makes $$ for the library. Third chance: it goes downtown to the Friends of the TCPL book sale, where it may make money for the library system as a whole.

posticon The Lansing Star is One Year Old

Happy Anniversary!Happy Anniversary! With this issue the Lansing Star is one year old.  While the Star began "sporatic reporting" in April of 2005 with a story about the resignation of School Superintendent Corliss Kaiser, our first regular issue appeared July 22.  One of the top stories was the approval by the Town Board of the Cingular Cell Tower at the corner of Conlon and Searles Roads.   Another covered the Town Board's debate about granting benefits for employees who are in non-traditional couples.

The Lansing Library had just checked out the new Harry Potter book for the first time, and had hosted a Vaudeville show as part of its Summer Reading Program.  The Star featured the historical Rogue's Harbor Inn and had the first of a three part interview with Lansing Schools Athletic Director Ed Redmond (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3).  Our first Star of the Month was beloved 2nd grade teacher Sue Frahm.

Nine scouts from Boy Scout Troop 48 recently returned from a week (July 8-14) in the Adirondacks. The High Adventure trip began with 20 miles of backpacking from Lewey Lake to Blue Mt. Lake via Sucker Brook Trail and the Northville-Lake Placid Trail. The second part of the week consisted of canoeing Blue Mt Lake., Eagle, Utowana, Raquette and Forked Lakes, before returning to Lansing on Friday afternoon.  While at Blue Mountain Lake, participants visited either the Adirondack Museum or climbed Blue Mountain, which, with a summit of 3,970 ft. and a fire tower that you can climb, offered a beautiful view of the central Adirondack region.

The Lansing Community Library Center (LCLC) capital construction project is well under way with the addition taking shape daily.  Walls are going up, the roof is under way and you can begin to see the shape of the building take form.  Meanwhile the last phase of the fund raising effort has begun.  With a goal of $375,000 the Library board has $25,000 to go.  Library Chair Marlaine Darfler says the board would like to come from smaller donations from individuals.  With that in mind the library is planning a "Building Block Party" on August 5th.

 Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

I just ended a very long relationship with a man. Although we maintained separate residences, we had keys to each other’s place for reasons that are obvious. It was an amicable breakup, and we recently met and exchanged items we had left at the other’s house. I handed him my set of keys to his place, but he told me he had forgotten his set to my house. I told him to drop them in the mail. It has been two months, and I have not received the keys. Should I be worried? Do I need to change my locks? Any suggestions?

Sincerely,

Beth Ann
