posticon Municipal Punsters Permeate Lansing

It's April Fools!   Special Report:

Since I began reporting for the Lansing Star last summer I have been preparing for the April Fools Day issue by making notes of puns unwittingly uttered by local officials. Sometimes they were uttered wittingly. As you can image, with one of the biggest ongoing stories being the proposed sewer district and the impact of the Town’s trunk line going through the Village of Lansing, perhaps it’s not surprising that most of the puns related to effluent.

Not to mention that in most of these meetings attorneys were present, and what is an attorney if not a sue-er?

posticon Teens Serve Spaghetti and the Community

While most kids are earning money and then spending it, 26 unsung Lansing heroes are earning money to spend on community service projects.  The Lansing Leos, the youth branch of the Lansing Lions Club, are 12 - 18 year-olds who enjoy giving back to their community.  Last Saturday (3/25/06) about half of this group were at Woodsedge to serve a spaghetti dinner that they had funded and cooked.

"They've done very well," says resident Eileen Cundy.  "They always do a good job.  I'm really pleased that they do this for us."  Another resident, Pastor David Braid agreed.  "They do a wonderful job," he said.  His wife Dorothy added, "They're wonderful young people.  We can be proud of them here."

This is Biomes Night season.  Each of Lansing's five 4th grade classes are celebrating the Biomes Night in which they present their research to teachers and parents, and celebrate their achievement with a special snack representing each of the six biomes they studied.

Lisa Peter's class presented Monday

"A biome is similar to an ecosystem," explains elementary school science teacher Sue Henne.  "It is all the organisms and living and non-living things that constitute a living area that are broken down by some of the characteristics of land, climate, and types of animals that are adapted to those things."  The 4th graders studied biomes over the course of the school year with different approaches and teachers as the year progressed.

Dear IMO,

I am the office manager for a small business. Every day I am inundated with phone calls and visits from just about any and every type of salesperson imaginable. From toilet paper to copy paper, I have to deal with these annoying sales reps in a professional and courteous manner regardless of their aggressive attitude. My office has everything it needs, supplied by local businesses with whom we trust. How do I get these outside peddlers to simply leave me alone?

Now that we have returned we need both foster and of course permanent homes for these delightful creatures. Several already are in homes, but we'd like to get them out of the kennel ASAP- they deserve a warm home.

All dogs are now neutered and those that were heartworm positive have been treated- thanks to the vet vendors and Meadowridge staff. We still have 3 Beagles and 3 Pit Bulls to place in homes. We also have a lab cross and a Catahoula Leopard cross out in foster.

posticon A Lansing Prayer Shawl Ministry

Worship ColumnOnce upon a time, shawls were worn on an every day basis and served many uses. On the frontier farm, a woven wool shawl could be thrown on for a quick run to the hen house, the garden or the milk barn. Dressier ones were for Sunday best, church services, weddings, christening and funerals. Many a Victorian couple posed for their wedding portrait, the bride-to-be wearing a family heirloom shawl.

Shawls have long been depicted in drawings and old photographs, worn around the upper torso of all classes of the population. Illustrations preserved from Godey’s Ladies Book and mail order catalogues are excellent examples. Plus, what little girl going to the Saturday matinee of the black and white “B” Western in their heyday did not notice the women’s stylish shawls, especially those of the heroine?

posticon Yoga Starts Monday

Lansing's Recreation Department's Spring Yoga course begins next Monday (04/03).  Andrea Smith will be teaching two different types of yoga.  At 5:30pm she will be teaching Kripalu Yoga, that emphasizes a gentle and compassionate self-observation while performing basic hatha yoga postures.  Kripalu focusses on what is right with people, not what is wrong with them.

At 7:00 p,m she will be teaching Svaroopa Yoga which uses poses to release spinal tension and create inner harmony.  This form of yoga is used to help people with chronic back pain.  It is easy to learn and considered to be good for overall health.  The idea is that body tension begins around the base of the spine, so releasing the tension in those muscles has beneficial results that radiate throughout the body.

posticon Fire Department Wants More Community

ImageThe Lansing Fire Department carnival has become a tradition that residents look forward to every May.  Adults and kids alike enjoy the rides, games, carnival food, demonstrations and entertainment at the three day event.  Most popular are the hours when a bracelet gets you onto unlimited rides, and demonstrations by the Tompkins County Sheriff's office are a staple.  Highlights of the weekend are the fireworks and the parade, a favorite for kids who love catching candy thrown from passing fire engines and floats.

Fire Commissioner Dennis Griffin wants this year's carnival to be more community oriented, with more businesses participating.  He hopes to have more booths this year where businesses can sell things or provide demonstrations.  "We want to get the community more involved," says Griffin.  "If there are businesses out there we want them to come in and set up so people know that they're part of Lansing."  He says that it is OK to sell items at the booths as long as it doesn't interfere with Playland's business, which is part of the Fire Department's contract with the amusements provider.

posticon Longevity in Long-term Planning

None of us can predict how long we'll live. And yet, as you chart your long-term financial goals, you'll at least want to think about longevity - because it's a key factor in developing appropriate savings, investment and retirement strategies.

For starters, make an educated guess about how long you might reasonably expect to live, taking into account your own health-related characteristics and your family's health histories. You might also want to consult with an actuarial table.

You might be surprised at the results. With advances in medicine and greater awareness of healthy lifestyles, we are living longer than ever before. In fact, half of the 65-year-olds alive today will likely live beyond age 83, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

 Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

My 16 year old son wants to get his driver’s license as soon as possible. He has been driving with his permit for just under three months. I have made it clear that he must take Drivers’ Education at the high school before he gets a license. He promises to take it this summer if he can get his license now. I think he’s still too young and needs more time on the road? What do you think?
Sue P.

Dear Sue,

You are absolutely right. With just three months on the road, he is very inexperienced and unprepared for solo driving. Although he might pass the driving test, he certainly lacks the basic level of confidence all drivers need.

posticon Something Like Life

Print Print

Travel and control your doubtless long path
Useless pleasure does no good refuse it
Freedom does not always last so just laugh
Morning comes every day so you just sit
A month takes so much more time in your life
You should take each day a step at a time
You should make yourself known with your own style
But with regret you should look like a mime

Use your mind wisely to choose your best friend
They should always be there when you're in need
If you are smart it will pay in the end
If not they could grow into a bad weed

When you come to a large bend in the road
Your path to success is to know the right code
