posticon Within Reach - The Boatyard

Within reachWhen I was young, REALLY young and the Rt 13 hill didn't exist, the Hangar Theater was still an aircraft hanger and the inlet hadn't been dug, our family's recreation was completely centered on the boat, a 17' Penn Yan with a 40HP Evinrude on the back. We would make our way out to the lake, going past the Ithaca Municipal Airport where Cass Park is now, and soak up the sun and whatever else the lake had to hand us.

Beautiful times – fun times – but then I wasn't even in grade school then. I DO remember Dad being upset that the gas pump at the dock was 48 cents per gallon. The price we paid for our cars was about 32 cents…

MacyBy Doug Scott

Hello, my name is Macy. I am a sweet 20lb dog in need of a quiet home with no cats. I have been adopted twice, but both houses expected far to much socialization from me. I am looking for an owner who will enjoy quite time at home with me, with very few visitors, just the two of us reading good books and watching the tube. Apartment living would not be good, as I tend to bark when nervous. Do you have a quiet house where I might fit in?

Dairy that is fermented and brewed like beer could soon be on tap as Sam Alcaine, assistant professor in the Department of Food Science, turns dairy waste into a flavorful drink with an alcoholic kick.

The research is more than a compelling addition to the craft beer craze: Alcoholic dairy products could be a solution to an increasing problem for New York's powerhouse Greek yogurt industry.

posticon Dear Margaret - Needing My Friend

dearmargaret My best friend of 30 plus years and I had a falling out a while ago, and I am devastated. We both said things that we didn't mean, or at least didn't mean to say. She was my confidant and trusted advisor. I could go to her with any problem and she could soothe and apply an emotional balm. We enjoyed so many experiences together, and had such a close bond. I don't even know where to begin to make this right and heal our relationship. I feel lost without her. I'm afraid to approach her with any sort of apology, because I fear she's not ready to come to any sort of resolution with me. How can I even begin to fix this?

Simba2By Doug Scott

Hello there! My name is Simba! I am a very handsome 9-month-old brindle boy. I am very active and in need of some training. My ideal fur-ever home would have no children, no other dogs or a very tolerant dog, and a super patient person who would be willing to train me. I take to training well, so if you are willing to commit a couple of months to me, I am sure I will end up a perfect gentleman! Please come meet me today, and we can start my training while I am still young and impressionable!

posticon Dear Margaret - Feeling Unfulfilled

dearmargaret I've been divorced for several years now, and have two adult children. I'm still in the work world, although I could technically retire comfortably at any time now. I feel like my life is and has been a good one, but I'm always lamenting that I still don't have a partner with which to share my life. I've been on dating sites, and each encounter has turned out miserably. My friends have tried fixing me up, and I've never hit it off with any of those dates. I'm happy being single, on the one hand, but feel a bit lonely on the other because I don't have that one person in my life to live out my remaining years. How can I find fulfillment if I'm to live my life without that one partner?

An energy revolution that will put power into the hands of the people is moving forward in Tompkins County, thanks to a collaboration between Cornell University researchers and energy industry partners. Their goal: A future in which households measure and manage their own electricity use, achieving lower electric bills, reduced emissions and a more equitable pricing system.

In the summer of 2016, a team led by Todd Cowen, the Kathy Dwyer Marble and Curt Marble faculty director for energy at the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future and the project's principal investigator, was awarded a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to create, test and optimize new residential electric storage systems.

On March 30, Challenge Workforce Solutions held its annual Reverse Job Fair at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Ithaca. Challenge is a local non-profit in its fiftieth year of creating pathways to employment for individuals with disabilities and other barriers. This was the third event of its kind and the first to include attendees from partnering organizations.

The fair was spearheaded by Jennifer Northrop, Challenge's Business Outreach Coordinator. She explains, "Most of the invitees are in active job development at Challenge, and this is an expected part of their job-seeking process. This year, we also invited several candidates from the Women's Opportunity Center, the Greater Ithaca Activities Center, and Significant Elements, so they could get the chance to meet with recruiters as well."

Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit – or TCAT – is installing nearly 560 bus stop signs, redesigned in partnership with Cornell University systems engineering students and the Cornell University Sustainability Design (CUSD) group.

With the new, bright blue-and-white signs, riders will get consistency, clarity, route detail and location, and – through text messages – learn when the next bus arrives. TCAT will be replacing the signs throughout this spring.
