Lansing Bicentennial Celebration

Lansing's 200th birthday was on April 17th of this year, and on September 9th the whole community will be celebrating.  The Lansing Bicentennial Celebration will begin with a parade that leads to Lansing Central Fire Station, where a carnival will include rides, food, booths, and an old fashioned ice cream truck.

"We wanted it to be more of a hometown fair," says Bicentennial Committee Co-chair Mesa Mayton.  "Corn hole games, ring toss games, more of a throwback.   We want to get as many people in as possible and just make it a fun day."

nikkiBy Doug Scott

Miss Nikki is a lovely 9-year-old tortie cat who lost her owner. Nikki is in good spirits nonetheless, and is certain that her furr-ever person will find her SOON! She wants that person - or persons - to understand that she loves being petted, sitting in sunny windows, and following that special person around. She'd likely snuggle in bed with the chosen person, too! Nikki's previous home was a quiet one, without a lot of commotion, so she's hoping that her NEXT one will be similar. If you're looking for a calm, easy-going feline, choose Nikki!

Deborah Dawson and Michael Koplinka-LoehrDemocratic candidates for Tomkins County Legislature Deborah Dawson and Michael Koplinka-Loehr handed out rootbeer floats Saturday

The Lansing Democratic Committee held an informal party at Myers Park Saturday.  Lansing Floats was billed as a non-partisan fun event where people could get a root beer float or a balloon animal, register to vote, and meet the Democratic candidates for Tompkins County Legislature and Lansing Town Board.

"Lansing Floats is just a community event," said candidate Deborah Dawson.  "We wanted to get Democrats and other residents of Lansing to come out and meet the candidates for Town Board and the two Legislative candidates and have some ice cream, have some root beer, get a balloon, and have a good time.  It's a beautiful day on the lake."

dearmargaretDear Margaret: I am almost 8 years older than my sister. Our mom has passed recently and I’m having trouble integrating my experience of our mother with my sister’s memories of her as a parent. It’s almost like we had two different parents. My sister remembers mom as compassionate, loving, kind and generous. My memory of her is of a stern, selfish woman who could be cruel at times. I still loved my mother, but find it difficult to be around my sister who gushes with fond memories that seem foreign to me. I’m close to my sister and need her during this time, and at the same time want to distance myself from her. How can I cope with this?

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, and in keeping with its commitment to support local communities nationwide, Subaru of America, Inc. will donate a Meals on Wheels delivery vehicle to Foodnet, in partnership with Meals on Wheels America. On average each month, Foodnet drives 9,229 miles to deliver meals. The donated 2018 Subaru Outback will enable Foodnet to replace a delivery vehicle well past its life expectancy, and help improve their ability to reach homebound participants that reside in rural locations.

Foodnet's Executive Director, Jessica Gosa said "Over 60% of Foodnet participants live alone, and more than 42% reside in rural locations. While Tompkins County is scenic, snowstorms can hit unexpectedly, creating hazardous travel conditions that challenge our ability to reach remote areas. The donated all-wheel drive vehicle will tremendously improve our ability to deliver meals to our older adult neighbors, especially during difficult weather conditions. We are looking forward to celebrating our partnership with Subaru of America, Inc. and Meals on Wheels America."

Sunday evening was a great night for a backyard barbeque but this was no ordinary gathering. It was an Eagle Scout celebration 12 years in the making.

Alex Powers, Taylor Overton and Jacob Williamson have each earned the rank of Eagle Scout and on Sunday, August 20th, the three were formally awarded the rank badge at a dinner and ceremony surrounded by friends and family. The three boys, all entering their senior year at Lansing High School, have been a part of the Boy Scouts of America since they were in Kindergarten.

posticon Rabies Alert - Catch The Bat!

tc healthdept600

The Tompkins County Health Department urges residents to avoid the risk of rabies and rabies treatment by capturing and submitting for laboratory testing any bat found in their home that may have come in contact with humans or pets. During the hot summer months, bats seek cooler locations on the lower floors of homes. This results in more accidental contacts with bats than at other times of the year.

There has been one confirmed rabid bat in Tompkins County in 2017. Rabies is largely transmitted through bites from rabid animals. Bats present an additional concern, because in certain situations a bite may not be readily apparent. This includes bats that are found in a room with a sleeping person or bats that are found in the presence of an unattended child or a person with a sensory impairment, or if the bat comes in contact with bare skin. Bats that have contact with pets that are lapsed or unvaccinated against rabies also present a concern.

posticon Dear Margaret - Target of Rumors

dearmargaretDear Margaret: I have been at odds with a former friend, 'Ramona,' for about a year. We have a mutual friend whom I see fairly often. The subject of Ramona comes up with this mutual friend, and she is always telling me the disparaging remarks made about me. It turns my stomach. Ninety-nine percent of what is being said about me is untrue and hurtful. How can I get Ramona to move on, stop talking about me, and just live her own life?

posticon The Pool Is Open! No, Really, It's Open!

Lansing HS Pool

After a year and a half of repairs, delays, and closure, the Lansing High School swimming pool is now open.  The Girls varsity Swim Team began practicing in the pool Monday, and school district officials have big plans for making up for lost time.

"It's very exciting," said Lansing CSD Superintendent Chris Pettograsso.  "It looks great.  There are some little things they have to finish up.  One of the biggest changes is the air quality, because the UV system kills the bacteria so you don't have to use as much chlorine.  So there is a huge difference in the air quality."

Clarence2By Doug Scott

Hello friends! My name is Clarence and I'm a VERY handsome black-and-brown tiger boy. I originally was adopted as a kitten in Florida, and I'm still very young - just 1 and a half years! My previous owner brought me to the SPCA because they just had a child and were unable to afford my care. I love spending time in a window, I'm very long, playful, and I cuddle at night! I have lived with other cats before and always used my litter box. I have already been neutered, vaccinated up to date, and microchipped, so I'm ready to find my forever home. Maybe I could go home with you? Come visit me today!

posticon Within Reach - The Vineyard Restaurant at Knapp Winery

Within reach Last week, I was disappointed that the Crystal Lake Café at Americana Vineyards was closed, so with tears in our eyes, we motored up the lake to Knapp Winery's Vineyard Restaurant.

No more tears.

We were greeted by the largest calico cat I've ever seen. Maybe 'greeted' isn't the best word, for the cat was basking in the sun. When I gave her a pet, she stretched and smiled. Yes, cats do smile. Otherwise, she was stationary. Ok, it's a laid back place.
