by Dr. Ced Riley

ALOT: An esteemed colleague has mentioned this folk belief before but is too steamed to talk coherently about it now, so I'll try to help.

I call it a folk belief: poorly educated people can sincerely believe that alot is a word. Often, they also swear that it's illegal to drive barefooted, that Elvis is still alive, and that a mullet is an attractive hair style. No, no, no, and no.

A lot is always, always two words. It's a lot because it's one lot. You could have two lots, or many.

If you must write a lot as a single word, the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired still offers Handicapped Writing Permits for $25. With this permit comes the right to wear a mullet.

posticon Rocky Horror Hangar Show

hangar_rockyhorror120'Don't dream it, be it!'  The Hangar Theatre will present the completely outrageous, always hilarious, classic rock-musical The Rocky Horror Show live on the Hangar stage.  Directed and choreographed by Devanand Janki (Who helmed the Hangar’s acclaimed production of Rent), this cult favorite is the final show of the Hangar’s highly acclaimed 2011 season.  With lots of audience extras, The Rocky Horror show runs from August 18th through September 3rd.

With book, music and lyrics by Richard O’Brien, The Rocky Horror Show is a deliberately kitschy, mind-bending mash-up of science fiction staples that explodes into a libidinous frenzy of aliens, small town innocents as well as 'a sweet Transvestite from transsexual Transylvania'.

posticon Smart Talk - Sign Up In Advance

SIGN UP IN ADVANCE: So many conferences and other events ask us to do this. Some even want us to preregister, or even preregister is advance. What was ever wrong with register?

How interesting: When I type preregister, Microsoft's spell checker marks it with a jagged red underline, and I'll bet they use the word themselves.

To us at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired, a request to "sign up in advance" shows that the event was organized by cerebroporosis sufferers, temporal retentives, or both.

Instead of signing up or registering, we send them our brochure. We describe our fundraising drive for the Edwin Newman Memorial Clinic for temporal retentives, and we invite contributions.

TCPL will share its regularly-scheduled storytime—the final Stories in the Park of 2011--- with actors from the Hangar’s Kiddstuff performance of “Goodnight Moon,” which is based on Margaret Wise Brown’s beloved children’s book of the same name.  The actors will give an animated reading of the book before turning things over to TCPL’s own Kelly Doolittle for more fun-filled stories and songs.

posticon Smart Talk - Rout

Print Print

ImageSMART TALK

by Dr. Parley Speake

ROUT 10: Yes, I know it's spelled ROUTE, but ROUTE should sound exactly like "root." A rout is a lopsided victory, or defeat, depending upon your allegiance, such as a final score of 44-0. Saying Rout 80 sounds about as classy as ain't.

This mistake makes the speaker sound even more ignorant when he or she pronounces "en route," a French phrase, as "N-rout" instead of "on root." Saying "N-rout" might make fellow citizens suspect you collect black velvet paintings and put spray cheese on everything.

Here at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired, we know we may have lost this battle, because even GPS voices say rout. Just as an abbreviation on amplifiers made people think "mic" was the acceptable way to spell "mike," electronics have made the unthinking believe that "route" is pronounced "rout."

Perhaps because techies aren't always scholars of English, the computer network tool called the router is universally pronounced as if it were a high speed shop tool for shaping wood. So yes, we're losing this battle, but we refuse to let it be a rout. A beautiful language is at stake.
