BEST-LOVED FAVORITES:  If the TV is on in the Fowler Lounge, which it is most evenings, Institute for the Linguistically Impaired therapists love to hoot at commercials for Best-Loved Favorites collections.

"No, I want the Most-Hated Favorites collection!" a doctor in his cups may shout at the screen.  "They were playing mediocre favorites today in the BuyMore, another might reply, just to keep the ball in the air, as it were.

The staff refrains from doing business with companies that display linguistic impairment in their advertising, including the offer of free gifts.  We urge patients to do the same.  This is America.  Those who speak English as a first language shouldn't sound as if it were their second or third.

posticon Smart Talk: Safe Haven

by Dr. Shirley Glibb

SAFE HAVEN:  When we're treating particularly afflicted but intelligent redundancy patients at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired, sometimes we use a simple two-step protocol.

First (not firstly), we have them look up the word a dictionary.  Haven, for instance, means "harbor, port; a place of safety; refuge."

Second (not secondly), we appeal to the patient's intelligence and ask how, given that definition, one could logically say "dangerous haven," if a haven is always a safe place.

The bright ones get it.  Not only do they simple use haven, but they also go forth from the Institute challenging their friends with sarcastic alternatives such as "as opposed to dangerous haven?" and "as opposed to impersonal feelings?"

Thus the world becomes a better place.

ImageRusty and Max are best friends from high school. When Rusty questions a large, blank piece of cardboard that Max is working on, an entanglement of language ensues that explores the complexity of communication. Max is trying to start something, but will he ever get through his conversation with Rusty to begin it?

From etymology to semantics, Hemingway to grog, Republicans to Democrats, everything is discussed in this whirlwind conversation that will leave audiences gasping for breath. Slightly political, slightly analytical, completely hysterical, A PLAY ON WORDS is a must-see for anyone who has ever had a wonderfully infuriating conversation with a close friend.
