posticon Operatic Drama, Intimate Scale

nysbaroque_teapartyPhoto by Elizabeth HedrickJoy, longing, haunting laments, and the hunt to find love: Monteverdi’s music brings to life the anticipation of battle, the rapture of love and the war between the sexes.  The period-instrument ensemble NYS Baroque concludes its 2011-12 season with all this and more in “Songs of Love and War” on Saturday, May 5, at the Unitarian Church at Aurora and Buffalo Streets. Bring a loved one and enjoy.

The dramatic cantata Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda represents the culmination of Monteverdi’s musical and dramatic exploration.  The libretto recounts the tragic love story of the Crusader Tancredi, who has fallen in love with the maid Clorinda; she travels disguised as a warrior, and Tancredi mortally wounds her in battle by mistake. The music is packed with heartbreaking moments of tenderness and grief. Also included in the program will be Monteverdi's Lamento della ninfa and other vocal works, plus instrumental music by Castello, Cima, Rognoni and others.

posticon Smart Talk - Whys And Wherefores

by Dr. Will S. Sert

WHYS AND WHEREFORES: At the Center for English as a First Language, we have a collection of special redundancies like this. Each employs a pair of synonyms. Lawyers love these pairs, as in cease and desist (stop and stop). And why not: At, say, $240 per hour, throwing in a useless couple of words is worth another dollar or two. Gotta make those boat payments, you know.

As to whys and wherefores, wherefore means why. When Juliet sighs, "Wherefore art thou Romeo?" she's thinking out loud and asking, "Why are you Romeo?" Which is to ask, "Why does the one I love turn out to be you, one of the enemy family?" She's not asking where he is.

She knows this spells trouble and can't help herself. She's barely a teenager, after all, and doesn't weigh consequences like an adult. Not that adults always keep inappropriate emotions to themselves.

But many can't control an urge to use three words where one will do, and make themselves fatuous.

posticon Smart Talk - I Could Care Less

by Dr. Thorn Schwa

I COULD CARE LESS: At the Center for English as a First Language, we say this to fellow staff when we want to needle them and get a reaction. Much like making a sexist wisecrack to Dr. Dot Pilcrow. Better than nearly any other usage gaffe, "I could care less" proves that the speaker just isn't thinking.

Obviously, if you could care less, you do care. When you say, "It could be worse," you're using the same construction, but "it couldn't be worse" clearly states that we have hit bottom. "I couldn't care less" clearly states that your caring has dropped to zero.

Why don't people listen to their own words? Don't they want to sound smart? Don't they want respect?

Perhaps you could say, "As if I could care less" if you wanted to sound sarcastic and a bit snarky, but you never do that, do you. You want that respect.

posticon Making Music with your Children

krarticlemar_120We are musical beings.  We are all born with the potential to make beautiful music. In fact, 84% of us could one day play in a symphony orchestra if we get the right musical start in life.*

Most children are born with the potential to sing in tune and move their bodies with accurate rhythm by age three or four if they are provided with the right musical experiences throughout their early childhood.  When families include music-making as part of their daily home life, children can easily fulfill that potential.

posticon Smart Talk - Cement

by Dr. Verbos Metikulos

CEMENT: Just down the road from the Center for English as a First Language is the One and Only Solitary Way Church of the Baptized Brethren and Sistren. It's not a megachurch, although here in Underbelly, Texas, we do have one of those, The Complete and Total Faith Church of the Whole Entire World.

But back to the smaller church. It's still a sizeable building, and new, with a nice kitchen, social hall, offices, and numerous classrooms. The pastor, Sister Polly Cotton, happens to be a friend - long story - and she complained to me the other day about her arthritis. Her legs bother her, she says, because she's walking on cement all day.

Actually, she isn't. None of us walks on cement. We walk on concrete.

Cement is the powdery mixture you add water to. You mix it up, pour it and smooth it, and it sets to form concrete. That bowl of flour, water, yeast, and salt is to cement as bread is to concrete. I don't know why I used that analogy; I don't mean to drop any hints about Sister Polly Cotton's baking.

Anyway, walking on cement would be like walking on a very dusty beach. Walking on concrete, though, makes Dr. Scholl's very rich.
