I've attended two debates for Sheriff between Peter Meskill and Ken Lansing. When Chief Lansing was asked about his lack of experience in running a jail, his response included: that running the jail was something he could learn, that it is fully regulated by the state and that he has friends who could help him. His answers reveal an appalling lack of understanding of the complexities of the Sheriff's job.
Sheriff Meskill, in contrast, has negotiated variances with the state that permit housing a larger population than originally permitted, thus reducing board-out costs and reducing overtime payments for officers to transport inmates to other facilities. He has also increased standards at the jail, leading to the first ever accreditation of the jail by the NY State Sheriff's Association. I seriously doubt that these accomplishments could have happened by simply following state regulations, by learning on his own, or from friends.
Given declining resources, overburdened taxpayers and large budget gaps I would much prefer to have as Sheriff a proven leader who can manage resources wisely and still raise standards. Please join me in supporting Peter Meskill on November 2nd.
