The SufferJets opened their 2009 season during last month’s Ithaca Festival with a narrow and exciting victory over Rochester’s Roc City Roller Derby. They hope to keep rolling in the victories as the excitement continues at Cass Park Rink. Ithaca’s own DJs Bob and Luke of No Radio Productions will keep the fans rocking with an evening of hot tunes. To honor the Canadian guests, the crowd will be encouraged to participate in a half-time Bryan Adams look-a-like contest. Cass Park Rink will open its doors at 7:00 p.m., and the first whistle will blow at 7:30.
The SufferJets place a high priority on community involvement and will donate a portion of the bout proceeds to Recycle Ithaca’s Bicycles (RIBs). Although the SufferJets roll on skates, it was the bicycle that symbolized women’s liberation for the Suffragists, from whom the team takes their name. “Let me tell you what I think of bicycling,” wrote Susan B. Anthony in 1895. “I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world: It gives women a feeling of freedom and self reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel.” The SufferJets supports RIBs as they revamp their 530 W. Buffalo Street location and continue to keep Ithaca green and rolling.
Bout attendees will have the opportunity to enter to win a brand-new SufferJets scooter, donated by Ithaca Scooter, in a season-long raffle. In addition, fans can get their own piece of the action by buying a tile to support the team’s sport court floor drive.
