As Cornell’s basketball team headed to the Sweet Sixteen, Lansing SCO starting thinking about a community event and how to include some of Cornell’s key players. With help from Casey Phlegar, Keara Lowenhar, Eric Hartz, Mike Schafer and countless Cornell administrators, this dream came true. Cornell Seniors Jeff Foote and Louis Dale were welcomed by SCO representatives and a beautiful banner made by Hannah McKinney and Richard McDonough. As seven o’clock neared, the line for tickets grew steadily as fans of all ages swarmed the gym to watch senior varsity athletes and Lansing faculty on mixed teams: Blue and Gold.

The game was intense as teachers and students battled it out. The Blue Team, coached by Katy Bland, featured a cherry-picking Mr. Hartz and Louis Dale. The Gold Team, coached by Kathryn Shaw and Kathryn Hornibrook, featured Superintendent Grimm’s wife, Mickey, and Jeff Foote.

The players and the crowd couldn’t get enough and an extended overtime was added. Though the Gold Team won by a large margin after seven foot tall, nearly pro player Foote pulled away to make numerous slam dunks!! -a majority of the game was surprisingly close. After the game both Foote and Dale were gracious enough to stay and pose for photos, sign autographs, and even raise numerous elementary fans to the hoop so they could make their own slam dunk.
SCO members thanked Luke Kutler and Luke Schafer for announcing, as well as referees Shalom Ngenga and Bruce Greene, score keeper Kevin Wyszkowski, SCO’s advisor Heather Miller, Varsity Chorale and the numerous others who helped make this event successful.
