posticon Varsity Football Snags Division VI Title

ImageThe Lansing Football team defeated Trumansburg 13-0 on Friday, and with the win the Bobcats claimed the Section IV Division VI Title, and a trip to the Section IV Class C playoffs.  The Bobcats took the opening kick-off and marched 67 yards on 15 plays culminated by a Trevor Countryman 6 yard touchdown run, the point after kick by Rusty Landon made the score 7-0, which completed the scoring for the first half.  

Once again it was the defense that was the story of the game as they kept a high scoring Trumansburg offense out of the end zone the entire game for their fourth straight shutout. The Cats limited Trumansburg to 42 total yards including just 3 yards rushing on 23 attempts, while forcing 5 turnovers, an interception and fumble recovery by Vincent Redmond, an interception by Curtis Fenner and 2 fumble recoveries by Andrew Lockwood highlighted the defensive effort.

posticon Lansing Swimmers 55, Odessa 28

Lansing's Girls Varsity Swim and Diving team won another meet Tuesday, beating Odessa 55 to 28.  In the first event Leigh Conley, Hannah Wingate, Erin Obrien and Kali Dean sped into first place in the 200 Yard Medley Relay.  Kelsy Quigley took first place in 2:21.15 in the 200 Yard Freestyle.

In the 200 Yard IM Leigh Conley took first place in 2:46.34, followed by Ashley McDonald in second.  Erin Obrien sped into first place in the 50 Yard Freestyle event, finishing in 27.88.  Katrina Mehringer took third, also scoring for Lansing.

posticon One Win, One Loss for Soccer

The Varsity Boys Soccer Team has a 11-3-1 record with one regular season game to play.  The finished second in Division III and will play in the IAC tournament next week as the wild card team.  The boys posted a big win on Saturday night vs. Southern Cayuga 3-1 with goals from Lucas Heffron (2 goals), and Ryan Mallinson 1 goal.   Walker Diebolt had 2 assists.

The team dropped a tough game to Marathon in the Division Championship- 2-1.  Marathon is a good team and just a bit tougher than our guys right now.

posticon Two New Wins for Varsity Swim Team

Lansing's Girls Varsity Swim Team enjoyed another victory last Thursday (10/05) against Southern Cayuga Central Schools (SCCS) when they finished the meet 59-39.  Lansing made a strong showing, taking first place in seven out of twelve events.  The meet began with Nikki Dean, Leigh Conley, Hannah Wingate, Kali Dean taking first in the 200 Medley relay, finishing in 2:04.43.  SCCS's Bethany Ortquist came in first in the 200 free, but in the next event Hannah Wingate sped to first place, finishing the 200 IM in 2:27.62.

Kali Dean took first in the 50 Free in 25.78, then Hannah Wingate took another first in the 100 Fly, finishing in 1:08.57.  Lansing was defeated in the 100 free, but sprang back when Kali Dean took first place in the 500 Free.  Leigh Conley, Rachel Bland, Erin OBrien, Claire Eckstrom won first for Lansing when they completed the 200 Free Relay in 1:54.47, then Nikki Dean took the last Lansing first of the meet when she completed the 100 Back Stroke in 1:05.14.

posticon Volleyball Team Aces Tournament

The Lansing Varsity Volleyball team participated in the Candor Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 30th.  Ten (10) teams participated in the Invitational from all over (Candor, Elmira, 2 teams from the Syracuse area, Hammondsport, Trumansburg, Tioga, Corning, South Side, and Lansing).

The Lansing Volleyball team went undefeated throughout the tournament and clinched first place when they beat their rival, T-burg, 25-22 in the final match.

The Lansing football team improved their record to 5-0 on the year with a 55-0 win at Newark Valley on Saturday.  It was a day that saw the defense intercept 6 passes, one returned for a touchdown by Vincent Redmond, while holding the Cardinals to 121 total yards of offense.  Curtis Fenner made his first of two interceptions on the day that lead to the Bobcats first score, a 16 yard Ryan Earl run, the kick attempt failed making the score 6-0.  The next Bobcat drive started at their own 6 yard line, following the second Curtis Fenner interception.

The key play in this 94 yard drive was a 47 yard pass from Redmond to Fenner that moved the ball out to the Newark Valley 44 yard line.  Redmond hooked up with Brian Milliman for a 13 yard touchdown pass, then Redmond passed to Earl for the 2 point conversion making the score 14-0.  A Matt Ford interception lead to the Cat's next score, a 3 yard run from Trevor Countryman, the Rusty Landon kick made the score 21-0.  Rusty Landon intercepted a pass on the Cardinals next possession, setting up a 31 yard touchdown pass from Redmond to Fenner, the Landon Kick made it 28-0 with 13 seconds left in the first quarter.

posticon Lansing Football Slams Watkins Glen

The Lansing Football team improved their record to 4-0 with a 42-0 victory over previously unbeaten Watkins Glen on Friday.  It was a total team effort from the start, with The Bobcats getting positive contributions from everyone on both sides of the ball.  The Cat's took the opening kickoff and marched 66 yards ending with a Trevor Countryman 6 yard run, his first of four touchdowns on the evening, a Rusty Landon kick made the score 7-0.

The Bobcats received good field position on their next possession starting on the Watkins 47 yard line they drove for another Countryman touchdown, this one from three yards out, the Landon kick made it 14-0 to end the first quarter.  Once again the Bobcats benefited from good field position starting at the Watkins 49 yard line they put together a seven play drive ending with a Countryman one yard plunge, a Vincent Redmond pass to Ryan Earl for the 2 point conversion made the score 22-0 at the half.  However, it was the defense that supplied the turning point of the game as they came up huge stopping Watkins on downs just prior to the end of the first half, securing the lead, and preventing the Senecas from gaining any momentum.

Lansing's Varsity Girls Swim Team had another stellar week, beating Elmira Height's Thomas A. Edison (TAE) 97-49 and scoring in first place in Class C in the 2006 Jack Thomas Invitational swim meet.  And in late breaking news, Lansing beat Watkins Glen last night, 121-58 (details next week).

In Tuesday's meet Lansing won first place in eight of eleven events. Hannah Wingate, Lexi Payton, Nicole Nassif, and Kali Dean finished the 200 Medley relay in 2:19.03. Picking up on that momentum, Kelsy Quigley took 1st in the 200 Freestyle. Next Danyelle Barron finished first in the 200 IM, and Erin O'Brien placed 1st in the 50 Free event. Leigh Conley was not to be outdone when she sped to first place in the 100 Fly in only 1:22.22.

posticon Bobcats Score Another Football Win

The Lansing Bobcat Football team improved their record to 3-0 on the season with a 48-7 victory over Spencer VanEtten.  The Bobcats utilized a familiar formula to gain their third consecutive win on the road, a punishing ground game that saw them gain 342 yards on 43 carries, and stifling defense which held the Panthers to minus 24 yards on 29 carries.  

Trevor Countryman was again the workhorse on offense gaining 197 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 15 carries.  Rusty Landon added 3 touchdowns, one on a spectacular 70 yard punt return in the second quarter. Fullback Ryan Earl, the lead blocker on the majority of Countryman's runs, closed out the scoring with a 3 yard touchdown run.  Quarterback Vincent Redmond had another solid evening going 4 for 9 for 94 yards while leading the Bobcat offense.

posticon Two Swim Wins in Undefeated Season

The Lansing Girls Swimming and Diving Team streaked ahead with two more wins in an undefeated season this week.  On Monday Lansing beat Dryden 117 to 71, and on Wednesday they nearly doubled Odessa's score in a 103 to 64 meet.  "Lansing had an excellent team effort," said coach Diane Hicks-Hughes after Monday's match.  "55% personal best times."

The Monday meet started slowly for Lansing when Dryden took first place in the first event.  Claire Eckstrom, Leigh Conley, Maeve Campbell and Rachel Bland took second place in Girls 200 Yard Medley Relay and Lexi Payton, Sarah Tull, Kelsy Quigley and Ashley McDonald came in third.  But in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle Hannah Wingate sped to the finish in 2:08:39, placing first.  Lansing girls took second (Erin Obrien) and fourth (Kendal Dean) places, also scoring in the event.

The Lansing Volleyball team is off to a fantastic start. The team is returning seniors; Randi-Lyn Randall, Katie Fenner, Marlene VanEs, Rachel Strohman, Veronica Glennon and Alyssa Fessenden. They started the season with a win over Dryden on September 5th. The following Thursday the girls travelled to t-burg and met a very talented Trumansberg team.

Lansing is now 5-0 overall, 2-0 in division III. After our season opener 4-1 win over Dryden, we’ve gone on to complete 4 shut-outs; 7-0 over Trumansburg, 6-0 over Waverly, 7-0 over Union Springs and 2-0 over Marathon. Lansing's next match is on Friday, 9/15 at Southern Cayuga.

Goal scoring is coming from a number of players this year which makes our attack even more effective. Leading the team in goal scoring are sophomore Rachael Palladino with 11 goals, 5 assists and freshman Ellyn Grant-Keane with 4 goals, 6 assists.

posticon Waza Flo Boys Get Season Rolling

The Waza Flo green boys u12 soccer team got its season off to a flying start with a 4-1 victory over Dryden last Sunday. On a beautiful sunny afternoon, the Flo got two goals apiece from Donavan Baird and Dennis Britton. Baird opened the scoring converting a first half penalty kick. After some creative movements, Britton scored the next two goals with rockets from the left side. Dryden pulled one goal back in the second half after which Baird scored Waza's fourth and final goal to finish off a very game Dryden team.
