posticon IPEI Supports Fiber Arts at Lehman Alternative Community School

ipei_fiber_120Nearly a decade ago, two Lehman Alternative Community School (LACS) students approached math teacher Sara Arnold with an idea for a new group that would incorporate their love for knitting and crafting with a fundraising component. Arnold agreed and together they created the Fiber Arts Committee with students creating handmade items to sell at local craft fairs. The funds they raise support many school-wide fiber arts projects, including the Quilting Project, Felting for Fun, Open Sew, Refurbished Fashion, and Knitting and Crocheting.

This spring, the Fiber Arts Committee and its current advisor Kal McMannis, LACS Humanities teacher, applied for an Ithaca Public Education Initiative (IPEI) Red and Gold Grant in order to restock much-needed supplies. The students voted on what materials were needed most, and the group was awarded funds for sewing machine maintenance, storage bins, thread, and supplies such as scissors, needles, and seam rippers.

lansingrodandgun_120The first annual Lansing Rod and Gun Club Sportsman's Show attracted a good crowd Saturday.  About 200 people came to check out the show despite ominous gray clouds.  But the rain didn't fall, and organizers and vendors alike were happy with the outcome.  The Sportsman's Show featured bow hunting, reloading demonstrations, vendors, contests, food and activities for adults and kids.

"This being the first test year I think it's a pretty good start," said organizer Keith Armstrong.  "We originally planned this to be kind of a small show to start.  We came up with the idea and it just blossomed.  The crowd is good.  It's a good start for the first year."

The Lansing High School concert last Friday may not have been in the courtyard this year (because of weather), but the wet weather didn't dampen the spirits of the performances. The Lansing Show Choir and Varsity Chorale performed under the direction of Lorrene Adams. To get the full effect it's best to attend the concerts live, but here is a sampling of this year's Concert in the Courtyard.

New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced receipt of a national award for innovation for a $10.2 million project to replace two bridges carrying Interstate 84 over Dingle Ridge Road in Southeast, Putnam County. A state of the art construction method was used to slide new bridges into place during the span of two weekends, saving time and money, and minimizing disruptions for the travelling public. The project was awarded in the “Best Use of Innovation” category in the northeast regional American Transportation Awards competition.

“I am honored that the Department of Transportation has been nationally recognized for our commitment to using the best, most cutting edge techniques to improve safety while reducing traffic delays during construction and saving tax dollars for the people of New York State,” Commissioner McDonald said.  “Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has set the bar high on innovation. Under his leadership, we continue to improve New York State’s economy by modernizing key commuting and shipping corridors, such as Interstate 84.”

cinderella

Little Miss Cinderella was ousted from her castle when her owners decided to get a puppy. Her previous owner described her as an affectionate cat that just wants to be with you all the time, just like a dog. Understandably, Cinderella was not happy about being replaced by an actual puppy! She has lived with cats before, and would most likely be fine with a well-matched feline roommate. Could you be the family that can spoil this little princess the way she deserves?
