posticon Scenic Lansing - Jonas Falls is Opened to the Public

ejf_120My wife likes to tell people that my idea of camping is Motel 6.  She's not wrong.  I like to look at nature through windows from the safety of indoors, but actually being in it is just not my thing.  So it was with some trepidation that I decided to hike Lansing's newest public trail to view Emilie Jonas Falls.  I wanted to commit this (for me) unnatural act because the Lansing Pathways Committee had done such an amazing job on the Lansing Center Trail -- and not just the trail itself, but signage, brochures, historical information, maps and maintenance.  So I was excited to brave the wild to see for myself what they had done to create this new trail.

The experience turned out to be magnificent enough to make a hiker out of me.  Well, that's never going to happen, but the nature path is an outstanding glimpse into one of the hidden natural areas that are sprinkled bountifully around Lansing.  Lansing Pathways Committee member Roger Hopkins drove me to the site and was kind enough to loan me a set of hiking spikes and a light weight aluminum walking stick.  We were joined by Committee Chair Maureen Cowan, committee member Sue Ruoff and her husband Steve, and John Young, who, along with Leonard Moore, Susan Barnett, Jim and Julie Young and Ramona Cornell granted easements on their properties to allow a public trail to exist on what is entirely private land.

roman

Even though they say I'm ten years old, I certainly act like a dog half my age! I'm always ready to romp around the play yard or go for a long walk through the field. My previous owner, whom I had lived with for most of my life, sadly had to surrender me because he was moving and couldn't bring me along. I'm used to being left alone in the home for up to eight hours, and I don't make a mess in the house when you're gone. I've also lived with middle-school aged children and should be fine with older kids in my new home. I'm eager to get back in a home again and share my golden years with a loving forever person... could that lucky person be you? Spend some time with me today!

Gerda struggled with adjusting to life at the SPCA, reports Jim Bouderau, executive director: “Gerda is a big dog, weighing in at 72 pounds. She is not accustomed to meeting new people and she is uncomfortable with handling. You can imagine how hard it was going to be for us to find her a new home!”

Hi! My name is Cadence, and I'm the cutest little black kitten that you'll ever meet. I was quite shy when I first came in as a stray, but with the help of our wonderful annex staff (and LOTS of cheese), I've really come out of my shell! Now I love to watch all the people go by, and I'll meow to get your attention. I'll even let you hold me if you take things slow. Because of my shy nature, I should go home to a family with older children that will know how to treat me right. With halloween coming up, I could be the purr-fect black kitten for you! Come meet me at the mall annex today!

A few years ago, my heart stopped functioning properly. A cardiac artery was blocked, and I felt some strange and scary symptoms. The blockage was relieved with a stent, and the hospital that installed it included a detailed lecture to all such patients. They don’t want to see us again. Heeding that information has kept me healthy, and I want to share what I’ve learned.
I’ve been nattering about food because I love cooking and eating. Besides, eating right can add years to a lifetime. Still, maybe it’s time to consider another potentially life saving practice, wearing medical identification.

You’re probably familiar with medical ID jewelry, such as Medic Alert. A look on line will show that hundreds of companies offer bracelets in gold, silver, stainless steel, leather, holographic plastic, and silicone.

posticon Voting Yes For Sewers

sewer_no120Dan,

As you know I'm a quilter.  Recently, a friend of mine who lives in Lansing and is also a quilter said to me, "What's wrong with the people in Lansing? They don' like sewers?"   So I started thinking about that.

You know when the "no sewer" signs first went up around town, I thought it was important that people were exercising their right to free speech.  But since the question of sewers (the disposal of waste kind) in town has been removed from consideration by the Town Board and the signs are still up, I've begun to take them all more personally. Recently as I was driving to a Tompkins County Quilters Guild meeting, I counted 15 signs banning sewers--two of them in the mile it takes to get from my house to Rt. 34B.
