posticon Exhibit Features 19th Century Lansing Dance

dance_bower120'Invitation to the Dance', the third in a recent series of Lansing historical exhibits features local dances in the mid to late 1800s.  The exhibit features invitations that are really advertisements for local dances centered mainly around North Lansing.  The cards give a taste of what local entertainment was like, featuring dances of the time, dinner, and live orchestras.  The exhibit is open now in the downstairs gallery at the Lansing Community Library.

"My Dad would tell about going to the dances," Says Lansing Town Historian Louise Bement.  "He said when you were done at night you would just get on your horse and go to sleep because the horse knew the way home.  You curried your horse, then changed out of your dance clothes and went to milk the cows."

angelicaHi! I am Angelica! I was found as a stray, and have really impressed the folks at the SPCA of TC with how outgoing I've become! I may exhibit some of these old traits though, such as not really like being picked up, so I'd do best in a home with no children younger than 6. I LOVE being pet, and will become a purr machine within minutes! Aside from my initial shyness, I am the perfect cat, who deserves a perfect life. Please be the one to give it to me!

Twice in 2012 the SPCA of Tompkins County was contacted by Best Friends Animal Society’s Los Angeles branch and was asked to help rescue small dogs who were likely to be euthanized at LA municipal shelters and 40 little (under 25 pound, many Chihuahuas and other small breeds) are already in new homes in Tompkins County and the surrounding area.  This time was different:

fdb_120The Ramada Inn was filled with emergency responders Saturday when the Lansing Fire Department held its annual banquet to celebrate its members and honor those who have served above and beyond the call of duty.  In 2012 the department responded to 416 emergency fire calls and 425 EMS calls for a total of 841 calls.  The Lansing department provided assistance to neighboring fire departments 41 times last year, and received assistance on 21 calls.

Representatives from neighboring fire departments and local officials attended the banquet, which provided a chance for department members to relax on one night for dinner and dancing.  Neighboring departments covered emergency calls for the evening.

posticon SPCA Pet of the Week - Junior

juniorHi! My name is Junior. I was sadly surrendered to the SPCA when my owners could no longer care for me any more. My new humans should be experienced with Jack Russell Terriers because I can be a pretty stubborn guy with a fair amount of energy, but I do settle down with people very well. I make up for my small size by picking fights with other dogs so I would be best to be your only canine child. I am also excelling at the clicker training I'm learning here at the SPCA! If you have a home with no children and are committed to giving me the attention, training, and love I need, I would love to meet you!

blitzenHi! I'm Blitzen! I'm one of the 20 dogs transported from LA where they euthanize animals like me who were there for a bit to make room for more animals. Isn't that sad? Thanks to the SPCA of Tompkins County I'm now given another chance at life! If only I can find that forever home though. While I'm small and cute, be sure to talk to the adoption staff about me to make sure that I'm a perfect fit into your home before you fall in love with me, if you haven't already!

posticon Food and Wine - Organic Food – PART 3

Print Print
Pin It
foodandwine120My last two columns dealt with various aspects of organic food.  Now, I’d like to get down to the nitty gritty and tell you which foods matter when you choose organic.

The non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes a Shoppers’ Guide to Pesticides and deals with fruits and vegetables that are both dangerous and less dangerous in terms of pesticide residue. If you find organic produce difficult to find or too expensive, you might not want to spend too much of your time or money on the following items which are considered relatively “clean”. According to the EWG, eating five servings each day from this group will reduce your exposure to pesticides almost 90% compared to equal servings of, what is usually referred to as “the Dirty Dozen” or “the Dirty Dozen Plus”.
