hf2011_120More than 3,000 people came to Myers Park Saturday to celebrate the 5th annual Lansing Harbor festival.  103 ran in the Lighthouse 5K before the official festival opening, and two fishing derbies -- one for kids -- started early in the morning.  Finding Tomorrow, The Burns Sisters, the Po Boys Brass band and the Canal Street String Band played live on the bandstand.  Cornell Raptors filled out one end of the bird spectrum, while the Baker Cup Chicken barbecue Contest filled out the other.  A good time was had by all.  Here are some pictures of the festival.

tolerance_120Social Studies Teacher Isis Ivery brought four members of the 2011 senior class to present a video on tolerance they completed as their final project in her class.  The video explores tolerance in Lansing High School, and proposes a campaign to make students and faculty more tolerant in the future.  While all four students graduated this year, they said that younger students are on board to make this proposed program work in the high school.  Ali Robinson, Kathryn Hornibrook, Joycelyn Ford, and Nina Lindberg asked school board members to sign a pledge to make the 'Civility Pursuit' reality in Lansing.

The video is called 'Five Simple Questions'.  It asks frank questions of students, faculty, and staff about the level of tolerance in the school, and then asks respondents whether they would join an initiative to bring more understanding and tolerance to the school.  After the video, school board members were asked to sign the pledge.

posticon Ice Cream Social Honors Ludlowville Native

lions_icecream_120Last Friday in Ludlowville Park could have been a scene from half a century ago.  Kip Opperman and Richy Stano played an acoustic concert in the gazebo, and the Lansing Lions Club held an ice cream social in honor of the late Jim Howell, a charter member who was instrumental in forming the club 50 years ago this year.  Many members of Howell's family were present, and the money raised is targeted for recreational equipment for the park in the hamlet where Howell was born.

"He was a charter member of the Lansing Lion's Club," says Howell's wife Phyllis.  "When he passed away he was the last living charter member.  They have such lovely playground equipment in Myers Park that is all new.  He had expressed an interest to the Lions Club to see if there was anything they could improve here in the Ludlowville Park."

Uplinger Distinguished Service Awards Monday.  The Uplinger Award honors outstanding Lions or community members who perform exemplary service to their communities.  this year the Lansing Lions honored three non-Lions, Gene Tobey, Kathy Miller, and Karen Bishop.

Tobey and Bishop were unable to attend, but Lions Club President Debbie Mann said they would be presented with the awards later in the week.  Clubs donate $250 to the Uplinger Foundation in order to nominate a recipient.  The foundation uses the money to award grants for humanitarian service, vocational assistance, operational needs, and emergency aid.

hfpre_kidsLansing Harbor Festival is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year.  On August 13th the festival will take over Myers Park for a day of music, food, vendors, games, and fun.  This year, weather permitting, you'll have a chance to literally get a birds-eye view of the festival from the REMAX hot air balloon.   The seven-story tall balloon will be tethered at Myers Point.  If there is no wind tethered rides will be offered for $15 with the procedes being donated to the Lansing Community Council.

"The view is going to be amazing," says Festival Chair Karen Veaner.  "I am really hoping that this will be possible.  We are grateful for the REMAX office for bringing this to us.  Amanda Ryen-Yowhan is on the Community Council, and she's done a great job of bringing this to the festival."
