posticon Scientists Come to Fall Creek School

Print Print

ImageFour staff members from the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) and its Museum of the Earth have been named “Scientists-in- Residence” for Fall Creek Elementary School. The four scientists are Dr. Carlyn Buckler, Dr. Richard Kissel, Chris Besemer, M.S., and Sara Auer, M.S.

The purpose of the program is to provide all students in grades K-5 with equal access to a scientist to answer their questions and get them more involved in their science classes. A concerned PTA member who noticed that science fairs were not enough to involve all students first approached the Museum of the Earth with the idea for this program. The school had previously done an “Artist-in-Residence” program that proved helpful in getting students excited about art, so it was suggested that the idea be adapted to aid the science program.

posticon Kids Clean Up Ludlowville

ImageLudlowville is once again a clean and tidy place as the children of Ludlowville (otherwise known as the Creek Kids) assembled at the park on the afternoon of Saturday 24th April to help clean up the village.  They have adopted the section of county road from the Methodist Church on Brickyard Road to the junction of Ludlowville Road and Route 34B.

Teams of children with their friends and parents set off in all directions across the village to pick up whatever they could find along the roadside, in the anglers parking areas and down Salmon Creek.  The unseasonal weather was very cooperative giving them a fantastic afternoon of sunshine which helped bring out enough people to collect eight bags of trash, enough scrap metal to build a small car (or so it seemed!), two 30 gallon crates of bottles and cans, one truck tire and a whole deer skull.

ImageTwelve-year-old Hannah Findley, a sixth-grader at Dewitt Middle School, had never looked at a bus schedule and only recalls being on a TCAT bus once when she was a little girl.

That was until Friday morning, April 30, when Hannah and 36 of her fellow students at the school participated in Dewitt’s third-annual “Great TCAT Race,” a scavenger hunt in which they all got the chance to learn how to ride the bus, read schedules and use TCAT’s new upgraded fare collection system with the new Tcards.

“I like that the bus is air conditioned and you can sit down after walking, “said Hannah.  “I will probably ride it in the future.

A wild turkey is claiming asylum from the Village of Lansing.  The hen has chosen to lay her eggs in the planter outside the Village municipal office building on Triphammer Road.  Because turkeys nest on the ground they are particularly susceptible to predators that can range from raccoons and skunks to opossums, crows, and snakes.  And people.  After mating it takes about two weeks to lay 10 to a dozen eggs, and another four weeks to incubate the eggs.  Once endangered with only 2,000 birds in New York State in the late 1950s, the species has bounced back to more than 65,000 in New York alone.

ImageMost daughters will make do with getting a card, flowers, or maybe some chocolate this Mother's Day, but about 15 girls will spend a unique day of facing physical challenges and bonding with their mothers.  Moms As Mentors is being offered at Cornell's Hoffman Challenge Course for mothers who want to help their daughters grow into strong, confident women as well as just get to know their daughters better.

"The purpose of the program is to enhance communication, bonding, and sharing between mothers and their daughters," says Katie Drossos, who with Courtney Wilkinson is managing this year's event.  "We're going to be doing this through high ropes, low ropes, a nutrition segment led by Sue Travis, and a story board segment led by Pamela Moss."
