ImageA dinner cruise on Cayuga Lake has been an Ithaca mainstay for many years.  Since taking over Cayuga Lake Cruises & Catering in 2001 owner B.J. Bliss has added lunch, brunch, and sightseeing cruises, expanded the season, the number of cruises, and catering private parties on the lake and in a land-bound events center.

"People would stop by all the time saying, 'Are you doing a lunch cruise?'  'Are you doing an afternoon cruise?'," he says.  "I saw that opportunity.  All these people are stopping by, I thought 'why can't we capitalize on it?'"

ImageFrom Alice to Zoey, Ashes to Zipper, a wonderful number of felines are purring contentedly in new homes this summer. Since the SPCA Annex at The Shops at Ithaca Mall opened in late May, more than 200 cats and kittens have been adopted by loving new guardians. The SPCA of Tompkins County is able to reach out to a whole new audience from the Annex.

Executive Director Abigail Smith points out that “people who come to the shelter on Hanshaw Road have planned their visit – the SPCA is their destination. People who are at the mall may not be planning an adoption, but visit our highly visible location and realize that they can provide a home for a new pet. Some people don’t even realize that our community has an SPCA and seeing us at the mall is their first experience with us.”

posticon Getting Lost in the Finger Lakes

T-Burg Mini GolfT-Burg Mini GolfYou could spend days visiting all eleven Finger Lakes and all they have to offer.  But starting last Monday you could also visit all eleven lakes in Trumansburg, saving gas and possibly winning prizes for doing so.  Doing it that second way would mean you are visiting the unique corn maze at T-Burg Mini Golf .  This year the maze has been carved out of a 10 acre corn field in the shape of a map of the entire Finger Lakes region.

“The maze incorporates activities that the Finger Lakes are famous for, such as wine making, auto racing, sailing and hot air ballooning," say owners Melinda and Michael Cirri.  "All eleven Finger Lakes are part of the maze, and each lake has a sign with educational information about that lake.  With the assistance of the Museum of the Earth, Finger Lakes trivia has been included in the maze to add to the challenge."

posticon Cancer Exams Come to Tompkins County

Print Print

ImageThere are two reasons you might put off a medical exam: money and convenience.  Your insurance may not cover it, or your deductible may be too high.  Or you may not want to take the time off work to go to a hospital and wait around until they can see you.  Binghamton's Lourdes Hospital is trying to address that with its Mission In Motion van, which provides mammograms and women's health services in five counties.  Wednesday the van made its first visit to Tompkins County, hosted by Brittany Station in Groton.

"We are reaching out to the women of this area to provide digital mammograms and women's health service to women that might not be able to get into their local hospitals or doctors offices due to transportation issues or other obstacles," says Mission in Motion Outreach Coordinator Christine Ondecko.  "We're here to provide those services for them."

posticon Harbor Festival Attracts 5,000

ImageIt seemed like 5K was the Lansing Harbor Festival 's lucky number this year.  When the day was over and the last people filed out of Myers Park, the counter at the front gate had recorded more than 5,000 visitors throughout the day to the third annual festival.  Between donations at the gate, sales of T-shirts and other items, and raffles over $5,000 was donated to help pay for the cost of the festival.  And the first annual 5K Lighthouse Run had attracted 62 competitors.

The all-day event at Myers Park featured five live bands, youth and teen pavilions, over 50 vendors, the Lansing Farmer's Market, a safety demonstration by the Lansing Fire Department, a new Baker Cup Chicken Barbecue winner, a class reunion, and a Happy 50th Birthday celebration for the park itself.

ImageOn August 29 about a dozen Ithacans will paddle a 45 foot long, 400 pound Hawai'ian outrigger canoe 39 miles from the top of Cayuga Lake to Stewart Park on its southern end.  The boat seats six, so the paddlers will execute periodic traditional Hawaiian 'water changes.'

"A boat will come ahead, drop six paddlers into the water," says Cayuga Outrigger Canoe Club treasurer Cynthia Brock.  "Six will jump out and six will jump in and we'll keep going."

posticon Fitness: Weight Loss Success Models

Print Print
Pin It
ImageOne of the most recommended advisements for success in life is to model the behavior of someone who is already successful and has gotten to where you want to be.  Shape magazine has a standard column titled “success stories,” of which I am a big fan, which highlights the stories of women who have achieved weightloss success. It is no coincidence that common threads run through all of them.  If you want to lose weight, heed the practices of women who have lost it…in large quantities…and kept it off.

ImageThe food court at The Shops at Ithaca Mall was jammed  as fans gathered to cheer on their favorite singers in the 'The Z Finals' last Saturday.  The five finalists would sing two songs -- one of their choice and one the judges chose for them -- to win a recording session for a song that would be featured regularly on Ithaca's Z 95.5 FM and passed on to major recording labels, plus tickets for two and a limousine ride to see the American Idol tour concert  when it comes to Syracuse on September 14th.

"We've been very impressed by the talent that has come out in this area," says The Shops at Ithaca Mall Marketing Director Kelsey Henning.  "We have a great community."
